Just found out today I drew a mule deer tag in the Red Desert for zone W in Wyoming, I hunted there last year for the first time. I hunted very hard and had a good time, but really didn't see many bucks, I saw a group of 4 on the second day, they were all kinda small, so I passed them up, didn't see another buck until the 6th day, another group of 4, and I bagged the biggest one , a not very big 3 x 3, but I would really like to shoot a bigger one this year! If anybody has ever hunted area W and could give me some advice, I would really appreciate it!

I take it you can hunt in areas 82, 100, and 131.

On the West side of 131, there is the Green River. Access along the Green River to the North via Blue Rim Road just West of Green River. There are finger canyons going West to the River. There are deer in those canyons, a good set of Bino's work well to where you can look down into the Ravines and under the sage for bedded bucks during the day.

Another Place in 131 is just north of Superior, there are tons of deer there, look for dead man's gulch, black mountain and places North and between the town of Superior and Bridger Power Plant and Bridger Coal - be sure you are not on mine property.

Best advice if you want to shoot a good buck is not to shoot the small one like last year!

Thanks japar, but I understand that! Its alot easier to do when you have time, but I shot that buck on the 6th day of a 7 day hunt, and it was the biggest buck I had seen, including 3 days of scouting before opening day. When I hunt whitetails at home I have plenty of time and pass any buck that I won't take to the taxidermist, but with a do it yourself hunt a 1000 miles from home you don't even know for sure what big for the area is. Beside he still tasted really good, and I didn't have a doe tag to put one in the freezer.

Dont feel bad one bit for taking that buck! You hunted hard & earned it. If someone wants to only shoot big bucks, thats fine. But dont put others down about it. I cherish big bucks too, but hunting is so much more than the rack size. The reality is that most of us cant afford the high $$$ hunts, and lifes too short to pass up deer forever. In my eyes that buck is a public land trophy of equal value to any other buck.

Thanks Trigger50, I appreciate that. I did hunt hard, and I didn't see any deer bigger, in fact I saw very few deer at all. I would like to shoot a bigger mule deer, and I'm sure someday I will, but, I was happy with the one I got, and the trip was great. I saw more antelope and Elk than I would ever have imagined, just not many deer. I didn't even realize elk lived out in the wide open deseret, but they do! i wish I could draw a tag for one of them!

Personally, I would consider a different part of the state. There are other areas of WY with a much high deer population. I recommend the Worland area. Plenty of public land, higher deer population. I personally havent hunted there, but my relatives have several times. They always see a "good" buck or two, of course they dont always get them. But they always fill their buck tags. Concentrate on the public land that overlooks the sugarbeet fields in the valleys. Deer feed in the sugarbeets all night then move up onto the public land to bed. Sugerbeet fed venision is yummy!

Hey jbw223, do you realize we only live 2 hrs from each other? I live in Hastings. You responded to my MN post @ Money Creek Retreat. I do an antelope/deer hunt every year in eastern WY, by Lusk. My favorite hunt of the year. It's nice to help out a fellow Minnesotan. Another area you might want to check is the Bighorn Mts. We did an elk hunt there several years ago. We saw a couple respectable muley bucks on public land and were wishing we had tags. That area does get alot of pressure cause you are close to several larger cities. Is it possible to get elk tags for the Red Desert area? Ive seen elk on the ranch that I deer/antelope hunt, but nonresidents cant get tags for that area. Residents can buy tags OTC for like $40 and can rifle hunt for 2 months straight!

Trigger50 how well do you do on deer by Lusk? I antelope hunted out there several years ago, shot a nice buck with a rifle, and a doe with a handgun, I did see a little herd of mule deer does, but was told it was not a good are for mule deer. I hunted the Big Horns 3 different years with about the same results as the desert, I came home with a buck at the end of a week of hard hunting, but nothing spectacular, good meat and a good time though. I started looking for a new place to try and the game wardens in Lusk , New Castle, and the Big Horns all suggested area W which is the Red Desert. But they actually suggested the Baggs Wyoming area, which is a mountian hunt again and Very crowded I hear. I wanted to get away from the crowds and the desert is a nice change, just not many deer.I think they give out 2 Elk tags and 1 antelope tag to non-residents in the desert. I don't believe they give out very many resident tags either, but the amount of antelope and thier size was amazing. The number of big bull elk I saw was amazing too! The draw odds are so low though that I didn't bother to put in. By the way, I did had the Big Horns as my second choice, and the New Castle area as my third choice for the drawing. All ny hunting is 'Do It Yourself' and I allways hunt alone, other than my girlfriend sometimes goes with just to go camping, and help pack meat!

Never could have got my Elk out of the mountians without the girlfriends (Ellie) help

I do OK, by Lusk for deer. Hunted there now for 7 years straight. My friend has a 12,000 acre ranch. He has antelope, whitetails, muleys and a few elk. The ranch has great potential w the habitat, but it gets overhunted. He lets around 20 guys in per year over the course of the seasons. I have yet to shoot a wall-hanger mule deer, but have seen 2 giants and shot a couple decent bucks. Every year, 1 or 2 big bucks are taken. Just not by me yet. Problem is that I'm lowest on the seniority pole of hunters there. All the other hunters have been coming there for 20 years plus. So they "claim" the best spots to hunt & they know where the bucks hang out year to year. I'm still learning. Did get a respectable whitetail there 2 years ago. A nice 8 pt that dressed out at 180 lbs. I look at it as a meat hunt w the chance at a trophy. I have done really good there for antelope. My friends & I have shot several nice antelope bucks (70-77 B&C) there over the years. Hoping to get a nice one w my BP rifle one of these years. I love the spot n stalk hunting in milder weather too. Nice change of pace from MN. Where did you get that nice bull elk? I been trying to find a good elk hunt, but have had miminal success so far. I hunted the Bighorns once for elk, we had $100 cow tags only, & 3 of us could have shot bulls! No cows. The trip was a huge disaster, dont ask! I vowed never to do elk again unless it was guided, private land or I went w someone who knew what they were doing. Havent been able to make that work yet. I do have 11 pref pts in CO for elk. Good luck in area W, try some new country, thats half the fun. We'll have to get updates this fall.

I shot the elk in the Red Feathers Lakes area of Colorado the year before last. It is an OK area, but not great. I hunted there 6 times before I scored, although I had bulls around everytime I went. I hunted 3 years with archery equipment, and the bulls just don't bugle in that area, the locals told me the elk quit bugleing there about 20 years ago do to hunting pressure. I was able to get bulls within70 yards every trip, but, never got a shot. Then I muzzleloader hunted for 2 years. I got on a big bull each year, but I sure don't like Colorados no sabot law. Before sabots were available my dad and I shot quite a few whitetails in Mn. with T/C Maxi Hunters, and although they went through deer you got no expansion, usually no blood and the deer ran along ways most of the time. In Colorado I shot 2 different Bulls at about 35 yards broadside in open fields, almost knocked both of them down, but never recovered them, or even found a drop of blood after searching the whole next day also. So I took the rifle aqnd that time things worked just fine! Shot him at about 150 yards in an open field, took Ellie and I 9 hours to bone it out and pack it to the truck, a little under a mile and pretty much all down hill. Down hill sounds good, but with a pack full of meat and a steep rocky hill, it trecherous! Trigger50 E-mail me some time jbw223@acegroup.cc

After I shot him Ellie hiked in with me with the packs, tarps and knifes and we boned it out, what a chore. You can see the hole right behind the leg, he was a little uphill and quartering away. Thats a 3 shot group, and he never took a step!

Butching in the open was a chore, no trees to tie a leg on too

Triple tapped with the DPMS LR-308, heavy gun (12.5 lbs.) to drag around the mountians for elk, but it did a great job!
