Hello Everyone - I am new to the club and hope I can learn more hunting from everyone. I have never hunt any big game and my dream is to to hunt white tail  or mule deer. I got into this early last year and been preparing all the goodies for me and my daughter but so far I cannot find a place that I can afford looking to spent under $1000. I been scouting public land with my daughter but there so much we dont know. I want to make sure we do this right first time. We lived in southern California if anyone out there can recommend an outfitter or a place to hunt in california , nevada, arizona? I am not looking for trophy hunt, I want a safe, fun experience for us that can help us to become a better hunter later. Any information or help is greatly appreciate.Thanks.

David

David---Welcome to the Club and BB!!! You will probably have to do a lot of research to find some public land you can hunt on with your daughterto be able to spend under $1000 because the license fees alone now for nonresidents will probably eat most of that up. I would suggest you make a post in those state Forums you mentioned and see if maybe someone would be willing to help you and your daughter out. Many times you can meet people and get in hunts for very little compared to the thousands it cost for an ountfitter and guide service. I have hunted and fished with other members and have hunts set up in Wyoming and New Mexico this October with members I have yet to meet in person, so get active on this BB and good luck!!!

I'd suggest starting at home, somewhere close in your own state.  Talk to a local game & fish employee or game warden, they should be able to get you on the right track.  There is a good chance on a big out-of-state hunt you'll spend a lot of time and money and come home empty handed.  If you love camping this might be ok, but to many 1st timers it will be very disappointing.  A day or weekend trip close to home will let you hone your skills w/o vesting much time, effort or dollars.  Good Luck.

That's what we are all here for, to help each other and learn! If anything else comes up, give us a shout, but stay active on this BB because it's a very valuable tool with a great bunch of people!!!  In fact, btr and I had never met until I took him on a bow hunt out in Wyoming last September and my avatar is what he took home!

The one thing you might think about is coming to NM or another state for a cow elk hunt. Here in NM a NR standard cow tag is $352 compared to a NR standard bull tag of $562. The chances of drawing a cow tag are better than a bull tag, and the chances of filling a cow tag are higher than a bull tag. Unfortunately everybody here has to draw a tag. When you look at a deer tag, NR standard tag cost $297 and you have to get a forked antler deer. So for $55/tag it would be a good way to get to go hunting and hone your skills for later.

I know how you feel. I learned on my own, trial and error as no one in my family hunted before me. I read books, magazines, use this valuable tool with the club (forums) and watched videos. If you ever have hunts in central Nevada I would be glad to do all I can to help. I'm not the best but at least I know alot of the area. Areas 16, 21 and 25 in particular. Good luck and keep pluggin away.
