Ladies and Gents,
I am getting things together to go on a 6 animal hunt in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I am using a Boone & Crockett reticle in a Leupold VX-3L on both rifles I am bringing with me. The 30-06 is one of these rifles and that is the self explanatory one. According to the book you have 3 categories of zero's and bullets. 30-06 I have figured out...however I also have the same scope mounted on a Savage 110BA (tactical rifle I know, but I am willing to lug the 15lb rifle around so I can get some long range shots) chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum. My assumption is that this falls in Category C on the B&C cheat sheet (i.e. zero at 300 yards and the bottom aimpoint is for a 600yard shot) and the bullet being a flat shooter dropping less than 35 inches at 500 yards.
My question is: has anyone seen a chart out there for a B&C reticle used on a .338 Lapua rifle? My bullet is the 250gr Nosler Accubond. It is being pushed by 87.5gr of RL-22 at around 2950 fps. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated and will be put to use on the range this weekend.
Happy Hunting. Rick |

A .338 Lapua needs target turrets to be fully utilized IMO. |

I have killed Blue Duiker with a shotgun from 20yds, and Oribi from 225 yds , Cape Grysbok from 190 yds, Val Rhebok from 150 yds, Klipspringer from 300 yds, Cape Bush Buck from 105 yds and Cape Kudu from 325 yds, all with a 7mmMag with NO fancy Dancy scope---just a plain ol Leupold 3-9 zeroed 2" high at 200 yds and knowing where it shot....nothing to remember....just hold and shoot.... |

Very nice Tom! That is the benefit of the Boone & Crockett Reticle...you have crosshairs at your zero. So with a 200 yard zero you will be able to see obviously the 200yd crosshair, a 300yd, a 400yd, a 450yd and a 500yd crosshair. No thinking involved, no memory required, simply point and shoot. The reticle was actually introduced in 2004 as a way to eliminate the thinking process behind bullet drop and compensation. I just needed to know if you would recommend a 200 or 300 yard zero? SDowling--In the future, a different scope will be used on my Lapua...but when you have one as a gift laying on your shelf and no eyes on your .338, you go with what you have. Thanks for the input gents. I went ahead and contacted Leupold on this because I am running out of time for preparing for my hunt (49 days remaining before departure). According to their tech department, a 200 yard zero should be the most accurate use of the B&C reticle with the .338 Lapua. V/R Rick

I really like the Vortex Viper when using the .338 Lapua as there are several fellers that have them on their sniper rifles at the LRRP matches I shoot in and they work great and no problem with the recoil. You should be able to get one of the Vortex Vipers for around $450.00-$500.00 and they are worth the few extra dollars. My shooting/spotting partner has one mounted on his off the shelf Remington 700SPS in .308 and we were hitting the 1,000 yard targets regularly. My rule of thumb for sighting my scopes is non magnum I sight at 150 yards and magnums at 300 and of course I shoot both at the 100 yard mark and have the results taped to my stock for quick reference. The best hunting while in Afreeca and as TIT speaks from on the ground experience you should do fine and get what game you are hunting as long as you can find it. |

I got a bud wid a .300Win Mag...he zeroed at 200, then shot 3 shot groups at 100, 300 and 400. He wrote down differences, vaccum wrapped it and taped to his stock----whatever works! |

Yep ! My .300WM has the correct dial-ins from 100-1500 yards tapedon the buttstock and a quick glance and tells me the correct number of clicks for each yardage mark. My M96 6.5X55 has the same from 100-600 as that is the farthest effective range for a quick clean kill should the situation arise but it can and will do the job to 800+ if time allows for doping and such. |

Seems like LR and all the reticle marks are all the rage these days....I didn't even own a scope til my eyes would not line up three objects! Still don't believe in shots much over 300yds....HUNT, get closer!! |
