Is anyone aware of a herbicide they know works well and is safe for use on clover? I am trying to kill some broadleaf plants that I am not sure what they are but are out growing my frost seeded clover. I have read of a couple, one being a chemical called
2,4-D. It was suggested on a few other blogs I have read but when I went to the store and read the instructions it said that it was not safe. The other product is Slay which I have read mixed reviews on. any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest that you contact your local agricultural extension office, or visit a well known local feed and seed dealer in your area. I never treat my food plots with herbicides after planting, but will just go out and pull weeds by hand if they are taking over. Many of the weeds that come up are naturally occurring native browse that the deer will eat just as readily as they will the clover and other crops. I would think that since clover is a broadleaf plant itself, the herbicides designed for broadleaf control just might also kill it as well. I always apply Round-Up or a generic glysophate prior to planting and that usually controls all weeds and grasses long enough for the crops to develop and be successful, but what works for me down here in SC's lowcountry might be totally incorrect for your part of the country.

Without looking them up, I believe Slay and Arrest are two herbicides that are safe for clover. One is for grasses, and one for broadleafs if I remember correctly. Do a search on them.

Thanks for the input. I decided just to weed wack down the whole plot and give the clover time to out grown the cut down weeds. After further review 2,4-d is not safe on all clover types and I would have just wiped out half my clover anyway. Although that is what Slay is designed for the review history I could find was too spoty to justify the $70. IF the cutting doesn't work I will just kill it with glyphosate this fall and re frost seed in the spring.

Go to a garden enter not the ones at home depot or stores like that specialty shops and ask them I got some that kills grass in my lover plot . Slay is for killing broadleaf in clover and alfalfa plots while arrest is for killing grass in same plots. look at Cabelas ,Bass pro and Gander mnt  they carry them for around  $30 a bottle . For more info or questions head over to whitetail institute  web site .

Hope this Helps
