I posted about a year or so back about what caliber to use to build a long range hunting rifle (out to 1500 yards), i encountered some strong opinions about being nutz and or irresponsible for wanting to try and hunt deer and other game at this range.  I was also given some support in making my choice so here is a pic of my 338-300 RUM that i had built.  It is a 300 RUM necked up to 338 it has a 30 inch brux barrel attached to a Stiller TAC 300 action (rem 700 clone) it also has a jewel trigger, it sets in a Joel Russo custom A3-A5 laminate stock, it has a 4 port muscle muzzle break on the front of it(to help tame the recoil) The optics for the rig are a Schmidt and Bender PMII 5x25x56 scope.   Let me know what you think

not yet but the first time out with it i did get a 600 yard kill on a groundhog
It shoots a 5 shot sub MOA group of 5/16" at 100 yards
It handles really good, i had a beginner out shooting with me and I had him hitting water jugs at 500 yards in 2 shots. He had never shot at anything farther that 100 prior to our outing

Kevin Cram of Montour County Rifles built it and with out the optics it was around 3500.00 and the optics set me back another 3400.00

That looks nice! Wish I could afford something like that, and had a place to shoot it.

It took me a year to get the rifle and a very very understanding wife to let me charge the rest. If ya ever go for one let me know and i can put you in touch with a couple of really good gunsmiths.

I'm happy for you and hope you enjoy it. Something like that would be totally useless in my part of the country, though. I'd just like to be able to afford such a toy, since you spent over half of my yearly income on it. Congrats and hope you have many years of successful enjoyment with it 'cause it certainly is a beauty!!!!!!

I built my own using a Yugo M48 Mauser reciever and rechambered from 8MM to .300 Win Mag with a full 1" fluted SS barrel, custom stock ( I built it ), jeweled bolt, kept military triger, and can and have shot and hit targets regualry at 1542 yards which was the longest target available on a grass airstrip. Cost barreled reciever $175.00, stock $200.00, barrel $100.00 ( from a feller that give up on his project ) , machine work $386.00 and topped with an old original Redfield 9X12X56 and it is a very good and dependable rifle. Myself and my shoot6ing/spotting partner were shooting against fellers using $7,000.00 rifles and matching or winning. It does not take thousands of dollars to build a long distance performer. Their are still somevery good Mauser recievers out there and for me they are what I always use when building a rifle. Till someone desings and builds a better one I will stick with them. The best to you and your rifle.

That is a very good looking rig and it sounds like it shoots as good as it looks.

the recoil is alot like a hot load on a 30-06 or a light load for a 7mm mag, it is manageable and you can shoot it all day long. Big Dawg you are right and can do it for alot less and that is where i started but the rifle i was going to re-purpose for the build has to much sentimental value it it so i decided to go all in and say it will only happen once. The only problem was once i got the optics all my other scopes cant even compare to the quality and clarity, it also helps that the scope i am using is the scope they issue to marine snipers and if it can take a round to the turret and get them back home safely then i should never be able to break it.

SDOWLING yeah it works great on squirrels as i have killed 1 at 240 yards with it and no damage to the meat at all but it did gut it for me!

Nice, your rifle reminds me of a custom rig I saw many years ago when I lived in San Diego. I belonged to a range that had great 300-meter stations. I was goofing around shooting my hunting rifle at an Antelope target I had set up at 300 meters getting ready for the season. This dude sets up next to me on a bench and starts punching little tiny groups at his targets at 300 yards. We got to talking and I learned that he spent half his year in Hawaii and had a place there where he could shot goats from his back deck. He said that the goats were smart because they are shot at a lot so the nearer shots were 600 + yards. His was chambered in 30.06 and was a tack driver. I hope you get to have as much fun with yours as this guy had with his.

I shot a tree rat with my 270 loaded with 150 grain bullets while elk hunting one time.  It did a great job of gutting it.  Didn't harm any meat at all.
