I've done a little looking around for a reasonably priced handgun and would like your opinions on one I've been looking at. Nearly ALL the reviews I've read on the S&W Sigma, at least on one police site I went to, loved the way the Sigma fed, fired and cleaned. BUT, nearly all of those same people complained about the trigger and quite a few talked about "fixing" theirs and making it a sweeter shooting weapon. I then compared the SD40VE to the Sigma and it looks like an improved model of the Sigma with the trigger pull reduced from 12 pounds to 8, and the accessory rail changed to the Picatinney style instead of the Sigma. Price is $350 or less when I look around so it's good for my budget. Really prefer the .40 instead of the 9, and as far as concealed carry goes we don't have it yet and I'm not too concerned about that aspect. Anyone here have knowledge or thoughts about the SD40 to share? Not in a real big hurry, but given the past events I don't think I should wait too long.

Thanks...

I owned that gun in 9mm. Very good but too large to carry so I "down sized". Correct about the trigger but that can be fixed. Just take the trigger group apart and take the trigger parts to a polishing wheel. Toss the trigger return spring - not needed, and put in a slightly lighter trigger spring. If you don't feel confident about doing that, have a gunsmith do it. As for the cost, Buds in Lexington KY had them for under $300 for a while. They will ship to an FFL. End of the day, with shipping and transfer fee it might be just as cheap to buy locally??? Good luck - is a good gun in my opinion.

John

PS - I have a conceal carry holster that will fit it. Yours for the cost of shipping should you pick one up. Nice one - is leather.

I actually just purchased an S&W SD40 VE yesterday. I have not had the chance to shoot it, but I do love the way it feels in the hand. The trigger to me is fine on snap-caps, and I have no issue with it. People who complain may be transitioning from hammer-fired SA/DA to striker-fired weapons and may be unused to the feel of the trigger pull. It is substantially different than a hammer-fired weapon. But I like mine a lot, and intend to enjoy it. Paid $350 for mine, but WalMart actually has them for $323.99.

That's odd.  WalMart got out of the handgun sales quite a few years ago.

Many of their stores got out of the gun business, completely, after Columbine. I heard on the news this AM, that they are going along with the Dick's move and pulling their ARs off the shelves.

Not the ones in Alaska.  The WalMart here in town sells AR-style rifles, handguns, ammo and to be honest sells LOTS of them.  Me thinks there are saner folks in charge up here.

The first news report on ABC didn't mention that Wal-Mart was only pulling them off of their internet site, not the store shelves in locations that still sell guns.

Thanks, guys. Leaning pretty hard towards getting this one even though I'd like to spend the extra for the Springfield XD. Still have to run it past the wife since she ALWAYS seems to think I have enough guns already! Not able to get out and look/buy anything right now, laid up for a bit from knee surgery.

jmohr3, thanks for the offer! I'll keep you in mind for sure.

Dave, I bought my Sigma .40, and then traded a new .410 for a new XD .45. I was lucky enough to win the .410 at a NWTF banquet.  I keep the XD in the console of my truck unless it's on my belt in the swamp.  The Sigma and a Bersa Thunder .380 are my concealed carry guns.  I am planning to get a new XDS .45 as soon as possible.

Dave I bought one of the new Springfield Armory's XDs in .45acp and it has now replaced my Para Wart Hog as my daily CCW carry. It came out of the box very accurate and the recoil is bout equal to the Walther .32 handgun. This new handgun is a totally designed model and not just a smaller version of the bigger XD's. The handgun is made in Croatia and imported by SA and the full size ones are standard issue for the military there. During the long wait while saving for my purchase I did a lot of research on sub-compact's on the market today and the XDs is the smallest .45acp available today. It is a single stack holding 5 rounds and comes with 2 clips, clip holster, gun holster, alternate backstrap, allen wrench for all things that have an allen screw, gun cable lock, and a nice hardside case. I have since gotten 2 of the 7 round clips and have on order a Crossbreed IWB holster and matching belt. Whatever you get be sure and checkout the Crossbreed holters at http://www.crossbreedholsters.com as this will be the last CCW holster I have too buy. I like most who carry daily have a box full of holsters that were all supposed to be the best but the Crossbreed brand truly are the best. Each one is handmade as they are ordered and after trying one at the local gunstore ( a different make handgun than mine ) it fits, hides, and functions like all the others were supposed to but did not. I will be able to wear it all day ( I always have ) and not have that spot that is a little sore. The wait time is 4-6 weeks because as i said they are handmade when the order is recieved so I am looking forward to getting mine while I am using the one that comes with the handgun.

Shot my SD40 VE yesterday and love it. The trigger pull is just fine, and the well designed grips make recoil and barrel snap totally controllable and acceptable. If I had one complaint it was getting the last round into the magazines was punishing. But if that's the worst anyone could say..... Otherwise, loved the gun and the grips fit my hand very well. Its a keeper. Very accurate too, although I did not shoot from a bench.

jplosay, if you experience problems loading your magazines, look into getting a loading tool. My XD .45 came with one, and I can use it to load my Sigma .40 also. Much easier on the thumbs.

Yep ! Till the springs get a little age on them they are gonna be stiff and hard to load that last round. The tool RT is referring to can be bought at http://www.cheaperthandirt.com or at most any place that sells firearms and accessories. Simple made and simple to use and man does it save the sore thumb syndrome from loading magazines when shooting all day at the range. I got 2 new mags with my latest purchase and they are 5 round mags and I ordered 2 new 7 round mags and they are a bit tough to load that last round in. I have all 4 loaded and will leave them loaded till my next range visit and by doing this on a regular basis the springs will get a little weaker making loading that last round easier to load. The tool is also fairly cheap and is worth the cost.

Sounds like my XDS!  Yea, I have a mag loading tool on order now.  I'll have to find the one I used for my Ruger P89 mags and maybe that will work also.

David, if this is to be the only handgun that you plan on haveing, I'm of the same opinion that RT and BD are---get a .45acp!
Even tho, I know that folk will think me Dingier then a Belfry Mouse, I'll explain why I feel that way!
For much of my younger years( ya know, 50 and younger), I was content with my fine wheel guns, the .357, which every member of my family used, and the .44 mags, which we packed when in big bear country. As far as long guns, we had our 6.5 Swede, several .30-30s, a fine ol' Krag, and a couple .300 Sav.. Plenty good 'nuff for the huntin' family. However--
One day my Guardian Angel, grabbed me by the short hair on the back of my neck, and said "Son, ya got some mighty fine firearms there, but, ya need more" Now when my Guardian Angel talks, I listen, 'for that rascle has pulled my feet outa many a ragein' fire!!
He  tells me "In the future, you are not going to be able to find ammo, except off the bodys of your dead opponents!! Those opponents will be wearin' blue hats!"
Need less to say, since, I have accumalated a fair collection of .223s', .308s' 9mms and .45acps! I will not buy a .40, untill I hear that them Blue Hatted fellers are packin'um!
Yaaa, my Angel could be wrong, but he never has been in the past, but say he is, what have I lost?? Got me some mighty fine firearms! Just in case, ya understand.

i have the XDM 3.8 inch in .40cal. It is my CC gun and I love it. It is small enough to carry it easily, and it holds 16+1 so I dont need to carry mags. As far as shooting I love it. The interchangable grip backs make it fit my hand good. The trigger is alittle stiff but it seems to be getting better or maybe im just getting used to it. What ever you decide to get and if your going to carry the only advise ill give you is be good with what ever your choice is. Practice with it and get good with it. The reason is that we could both be in the same place some day and if you have to pull your weapon to defend yourself or your family, I really dont want you to miss and hit me, because if you shoot me then you are my enemy and I do not miss. So practice practice practice! PLEASE!

The S&W is on it's way! Price was right and had a chance to put my hands on one. Felt pretty good even though I couldn't shoot it.

ahoffman2, no offense, but if finding ammo comes down to taking it from the blue hats after a firefight then I'll be in trouble anyway. Once it comes down to close quarter combat with any kind of troops where I fall back upon a handgun I don't believe a single person could defend himself for long against multiple well armed troops.

Congrats!  I think you'll be happy with the SD40VE.

I'm not sure Allen's intent was to say that he'd only use guns that he could find ammo by taking it off others, but he does make a valid point.  It wouldn't be prudent to carry something that uses an obscure ammo that will be hard to come by.  Such was the rationale for NATO commonality where everyone carried the same calibers and cartridges.  Anyway, completely off topic, so ...

Enjoy that SD40VE!!!

No worries. Still waiting for my pistol to show up at my gun shop. Then I have to do the paperwork. THEN it's another 72 hours waiting period. Not to mention the shop is only open 4 days a week. I think I can wait. Still need to go buy ammo...

Dave, I'm confused. I thought you had already purchased the gun. So, if you're waiting for it to come in, wouldn't the only thing left to be done is record the serial number on the 4473 form? So what other paperwork is required? Also, why doesn't the time you've had to wait count as the 72 hour waiting period? Don't you already have a CCW? If you do, why is there any waiting period at all?

Down here, I can walk into any SC gun store, pick out the gun I want, fill out the 4473, the store makes a photo copy of my DL and my CCW, I pay them and walk out with my purchase. I can even do the same in Georgia as long as I'm purchasing a long gun, and even that's about to change for a handgun as well.

RT, you forget one thing. I live in Illinois!

The 72 hours is from when the form is filled out. No gun, no number. Won't count for waiting if it's all filled out but the serial number. Still have to wait 72 after that gets put in. And no, I don't have a CCW permit. Wouldn't matter, Illinois doesn't recognize them. Yet. Expecting a call any time now. Mailed my payment before New Year's so that took just a bit longer to get there. Then it has to get sent here. It's just something we have to deal with.

We have to wait on handguns in WI too. I have a S&W M&P .40 and like it, hope you like your S&W Dave. I read reviews on the triggers when I was deciding between a Glock, XD and M&P, bought the Smith. There are trigger "fixes", but I think alot of it is what you're used to and get used to as well.

Envelop arrived and all is well.  I was hoping you would make sure it worked first though.  Please let me know.  That normally goes in the small of the back with the butt-end of the gun facing your left elbow - I know, awkward.  Seems like it should be other way around but that is how it works.  Suppose you could place it in the front in your belt line but be careful of the "family treasure"   I never could get used to it.

Thanks Again

John
