Looking for a range gun at 400 yrds. I will want to scope it, but this is new territory for me in older guns. |

Do you want a military surplus rifle chambered in 6.5X55 or do you just want any rifle in 6.5X55? Scoping one of the old mil-surp rifles may require some gunsmithing. On the other hand, there are modern rifles available in 6.5X55 that scoping will be easy.

Been thinking of selling mine. It is all matching-numbers, wood and all, and has all the crowns present. It was restored to "match-less" grade by a friend/student of mine for me at gunsmithing school. The only problem is he slightly washed-out the gorgeous crown atop the receiver, but it is still there. Not sure yet what I'll ask for it, but I am looking at some in that ball=park near $400. |

These old Swede's are getting harder to find at reasonable prices. You may want to get price quotes on some of the work you want to get done, unless you are skilled enough to do it yourself. It's almost sad to see one in original condition get chopped up for little or no advantage as far as accuracy, and even less as far as hot handloads. In my opinion, you would be better off with a model 98 action to build on. They are far more plentiful and stronger actions. If you're really interested, I have a brand new Mark X 98 action in the white, with a Timney trigger with a Remington style safety set at three pounds, a Parker Hale magazine with an engraved floorplate of a bighorn sheep and new spring and machined follower for sale. You'll just need to barrel it, blue it, scope it, and stock it. Shoot me a PM if interested. I need $350 for it. |

if you are looking for a project swedish mauser in 6.5x55 to scope you are in for a treat. there is 2 ways to get the bolt to clear a scope. either bend or cut and reweld. both use alot of heat and need heat sinks so you dont take the temper out of the locking lugs. I prefer the cut and reweld method. it looks better and I can get on a better looking bolt handle. as far as it being a 400yd gun use 160 grain round nose seated out, the millitary throats are cut for the longer bullet. but they do shoot quite well if the barrel hasn't been shot out before you get it. have fun, I enjoy all of mine and have shot many targets and animals with them. |

Here are two site for project guns http://www.sarcoinc.com and http://www.samcoglobal.com and they have some of the last sniper rifles avaailable in the Swedish 1896 models. Also Samco Global sell barreled recievers for building your own rifle. |

I think you have that backwards. Most ammo makers load their 6.5x55 stuff down a bit knowing that somebody might use it in a vintage Swede. Mine shoots handloads just fine using data in the loading manuals. But I never approach a max load either. |

I have shot modern ammo since day one in my 1896 model Swedish Mauser and not one single problem. I have seen no need whatsoever to try an load the ammo to any +P levels as it has killed every deer and hog I shot with it. It is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot or owned. It was imported to this country for a company called Jumbo Sports and after researching I found that mine along with some others had been sent to Kimber America and sporterized with a medium weight barrel, jeweled bolt, and the trigger smoothed as much aspossible. It was then put in a Bell and Carlson synthetic stock. I know all of this because when I found it had been sent ot Kimber I called them ( They were still located in Yonkers ) and spoke with one of the gunsmiths there and he told me the minimum done to the rifle would have cost $500.00+ and I got mine for a total of $311.00 as I traded a Chinese SK that I had put into a Dragonov style stock and had replaced the reciever cover with one that has the scope mount made into it. After the trade I made for the SK and the things I mentioned here my total investment was the $311.00. I have a good friend who at the time owned a Pawn shop and when he saw the SK he immediately wanted it so I ask what he had to trade. He pointed to the rifles and said any one of those and the Mauser was one of them and we traded plus he threw in a .32 Bryco/Jennings and 500 rounds of .22 ammo. I would only tell you to have whatever you end up with checked out by a reputable smith and as long as he says it is OK modern ammo should not be a problem.
PS: Samco Global even has some original Swedish Mauser sniper rifles with everything included. |

I shoot the 149gr bullets and with Hornady ammo it will shoot 1/4" groups all day at 100 yards and with Norma ammo it will shoot sometimes through the same holes and will shoot smaller groups than the Hornady. I am lucky in the fact that all my long guns as well as my handguns all really like the Hornady brand ammo. When shooting LRRP matches my partner and I were using my Swede for 600 and under targets and using his off the shelf Remington 700 SPS in .308 for the same and out to 800 yards. For all targets 800-1500 yards we were suing my .300 Win Mag that started it's life as a Yugo M48 in 8MM barreled reciever. I stripped the reciever and started there and rechambered to .300 WM and installed a 24" full 1" fluted stainless steel barrel. Smoothed out the military trigger as much as possible, made a stock for it and glass bedded the reciever and the first 2"s of the barrel. I then installed 2 Dead Mule mercury recoil reducers with one in the buttstock and I routed out a channel under the barrel in the forearm of the stock and put the other one in the routed out channel and when I glassed the reciever and first 2"s of the barrel I also glassed over the Dead Mule. I have one of the last Redfield 3X12X56 scopes that Redfield made before being sold to Blount inc. installed which I will be replacing with a new Vortex scope when I decide on the model I want. If anyone has one of the original Redfield scopes I would interested in buying it as I collect the Original Models ! As we know they changed owners more than once when first sold and are now owned and produced by Leupold. I am only interested in the ones made before they were sold back in the late 90's. |
