I am going to Colorado to chase elk next fall. I am wondering if anyone else has used a 300 win short mag and what the best bullet would for elk. I don't reload yet so am looking for advice in over the counter ammo.  Thanks

use a premium bullet from Nosler hornady barns the ammo companies offer these bullets and use a 165 gr. or 180gr. the 300WSM is more than enough for Elk

either one of those bullets will get the job done... I dropped a bull 3 years ago at 479 yards with a 165 grain bullet and it put the hurting on him... Do you mind if i ask where your planning on going hunting

Hornady has some great new loaded ammo as well as introducing some new bullets and weights for 2013 so check them out. As for the bullet weight for your use I would use a 180+gr weight. You can use a lighter weight but my personal choice would be the 180+ as I stated. Simply a personal choice and nothing more nor less.

I appreciate all the advice THANK YOU all ! I was leaning towards 180gr myself. I don't reload so will get a couple different brands and weights and see how each shoots.

I've never hunted outside of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, so have no info on Elk. I have used my .300wsm for white tails here in SC, and I personally have the best performance in my Winchester model 70 .300wsm using Winchester Ballistic Silvertip 150 grain ammo. I've patterned Hornady, Federal, and Remington, in 150 and 180 grain, but the Winchester 150s group the best in my particular rifle.

go with the heavier bullets 165 or 180 gr. and use a premium bullet I use my 300WSM on whitetails in Missouri but elk are big and need to be anchored were they stand nosler partition, barns x bullet would be a great choice

I would run 180's in a standard bullet or the Nosler Partition. With the Barnes TSX or something similar from Hornady et al, I would try the 165 grainers. They'll act like a 180 but have more velocity.

Try both 180 a 165 and see which your gun likes best, at the range you like.

Once you get into "elk calibers" the bullet design & construction is more important than the choice of caliber or bullet weight.  Personally I only use Barnes solid copper bullets for big game.  They perform beautifully. They'll expand the same at long or short range, retain 100% or near 100% of their weight and there's 0 chance of any lead in the meat.  A couple weeks ago I recovered my muzzleloader bullet, a Barnes (TMZ I think) from my elk and it looks just like they show in the adds - cool and mean, more closely resembleing a slug with 6 knife blades folded back than 1 rounded stone that many bullets resemble.  I'll buy into the Barnes hype that this results in better performance.  My .270WSM has killed elk with a little 130gn Barnes bullet.  I would take this before any other caliber with a lead-core hollow point.  I thought I saw that another company was starting to sell solid copper bullets also.  Has anyone seen them?

I use Nosler accubond 165 gr at 480 yards and it got the job done on a 6x6 that weighed about 750 lbs gutted and skinned and he didn't run anywhere he just fell right in his tracks... so that would be my choice i have had a lot of success with that round and so has my dad.... and it don't tear up a lot of meat

I shoot a Savage 300 Win Mag. i use Winchester Accubond 180 grain. I tried.2 different Federalds, Hornaday, and these Winchesters. The winchesters grouped the best out of my gun. Took a moose at 175yds. with 1 shot. The best advice I can give you is buy quality ammo, That your gun will like. The price of your trip and everything can be ruined by cheap ammo. Good luck.

well i appreciated all the advice thank you all. I shot a few different brands and with my rifle ended up using Remington Premier Accu-Tip 180gr. I got the best performance from this over Winchester, federal and Hornady. I will say this the Winchester E-Tip was absolutely awesome but its just out of my price range. But we will see what happens as the E-tip out preformed anything else.

Bonded Bullets, Partition or interlocks are the best medicine to plant elk. I reload Hornady 190 grain Interlocks for my 300 WSM, Weatherby Sub MOA, and it is atight shooter wit a lot of punch and meets the sub MOA guarantee too
