Just wondering what you all do for water? I have a Katadyn pro and plan on using it a lot, do you all carry water or get it out of steams?

Hy longbowhunter. You do not want water out of streams unless you can purify it. I generally care tablets for emergency needs but carry water with me daily. Actually every hunt morning and evening. Make sure you drink plenty. Just your breathing alone will pull moisture right out of your mouth at altitude. Colorado is famous for low humidity and that just compounds the problem.

I pack a water purifing pump with me in the back country. When the water bladder getts low you just stop and fill it. They make some real good ones. They are worth the money. Tablets taste like clorine, but are lighter.

Like you Longbowhunter, I carry a katadyn pro. I also carry a small water bladder and a stainless steel bottle as well. If it is cool I filter stream water in to the steel and boil it after that to make tea. If it is warm I filter in to the steel and place that in the nice cool stream. If I know I will be heading back that way and no one else is in the area I sometimes leave the steel bottle in the stream( tied to something so it won't drift down stream! ) and place a reflector on it as well as mark it in my GPS. On my way back I have a nice cold filtered drink and did not have to carry the weight all day.

Take it from someone who has spent years packing gallons of water into remote camps on horseback. Enough for 4 guys for 3-4 days. Last year we all got Katadyn water filters and we packed in empty bottles making room for more gear and food. It was the most pleasant pack trip ever. The horses were fresher for the hunts and we were able to stay more hydrated as we could drink more in the early part of the stay not worrying about running out of water. The water tastes great and is cool coming right out of high mountain streams. Just my 2 cents worth.

just carry a bladder and a 5 gallon jug for cooking or what ever when you stop to eat fill your jug up in a stream i have never worried about un clean water. I also hunt the high country of oregon so there is no worries of beavers or cattle. Just be sure there are no wallows or big pool pockets that look like elk are stomping around in.

Damn shame what has happened to our mountain streams ....in late 60's and 70's , we could drink out of streams in Appalachians.....in mid-70' and maybe early 80's we could drink out of any stream in Rockies.....now we have to treat water out of springs and aquifers....sucks!! Treatment screws up taste of neat Single Malt with a drip or two of water....

Water purifier all the way. Less weight than carrying water in and you won't run out of water. Also I was fishing up a remote crystal clear stream and drinking out of the stream all day long. About three in the afternoon came around a corner to a nice pool to fish in and noticed a dead cow elk about half in the water. I din't get sick but the thought of all the water I drank that day didn't sit well in my stomach. You never know what is upstream in the water.

I make a yearly trip into the boundry waters, when we are out moving around like you we use the Katadyn hand pumps and those are easy enough if your not a person who drinks a ton of water. When we settle in one spot for a while I like to use my Katadyn base camp micro filter, fill the large bag and hang from a tree and run the hose into a collapsible polyethylene container and let gravity do the rest.
