I use any muzzleloader that happens to strike my fancy, the morning of the hunt. I have flintlocks, percussion models, fast twist, slow twist, moderate twist rifles, lots of inlines, scoped and without scopes. I have long barrel, even several carbines for trees and stalking. So it depends on where I decide to hunt, the terrain the am going to hunt, the style I want to hunt, and the weather I will face. My favorite rifles are my White Inline rifles that shoot large conical bullets. Deadly accurate and can plant a deer real fast. I also like my flintlocks. For some reason I enjoy using a roundball and a flintlock. I have no fears of the stories and advise professional writers have claimed of the roundball being inefficient and not a good deer load except at short distances.. no one ever told my rifles they could not handle the job.

But my plans at this point are...

So if opening day is nice and sunny, it will be a Lyman Great Plains HUNTER model with the 1-32 twist. I will be shooting 80 grains of Goex 2f since it is a flintlock, and be using a 295 grain powerbelt. Why the powerbelt.. they are very accurate and I want to see for myself (if the opportunity presents itself) why some people hate powerbelts. I intend on taking a high percentage shot, behind the shoulder, and see just what the rifle and projectile can do. I will be hunting from a ground blind in the marsh.

If the weather is nasty, I will be out in the wood with my White Bison .504 caliber. It will be loaded with 80 grains of Triple Seven 2f and a 460 grain Bull Shop flat nose conical bullet. The rifle is an inline, has a 4x32mm Simmons Pro Diamond scope, and uses a #11 ignition system. I will be hunting along the edge of the marsh where shots are 50 yards and under, and when or if the shot presents itself, will plant my buck with a high shoulder shot. I will be in a tree stand watching where they cross the creek.

I own 3 muzzleloaders all in 50cal. T/C Hawken Flintlock, T/C Triumph in-line & A&H model 420 in-line. The T/C Triumph/with 3-50gr Pyrodex Pellets and 250gr T/C Super Glide Sabots did its job on 2 mature doe during the special muzzleloader season Oct 15-22 in PA. One was shot thru the heart at 45yds/went 15yds and the other shot thru both lungs at 90yds/went 30yds. Freezer has backstraps in it.

Lyman .54 GPR with prb, T/C .50 Thunderhawk or a CVA .50 Staghorn with Hornady GreatPlains 385 gr. Took a community ed class in Wis about 20 yrs ago and bought first rifle 18 yrs ago and could never get it to shoot very well for me. Then a turn barrel fifty at Cabela's man was that heavy sold it bought a CVA inline shot several deer with it then sold it, bought another one gave it to a missionary/pastor friend. Won a NAHC "click and win" A&H inline was nice to the eye but poor performace. Traded A&H for T/C and CVA we still us. Bought a .45 CVA mountian rifle and traded it for GPR. 5" of fresh snow hope to hunt after Church tomorrow.

A member 25-30 yrs. that does not have one, I'll be willing to give him(her) my 50 cal Hawken(beautiful). Got to old(or sorry) to go around boiling a barrel like I did for 30 yrs. Did get it tapped for a scope, but dealing with the scope and the boiling water, got to me. I could shoot the arse end of a beer can at 100yrds with the open sights. My eyes went to heelll, and I just can't see that gun just sitting idle.

terneral that is a most generous offer that I am sure someone will take you up on. I know personally what you are saying. In my case I have a 70 yr old body but only 1 1/2 yr old eyes. I too was losing vision in both eyes but cataract surgery with corrective lens replacement gave me new life for my vision. If cataracts are your problem I would strongly suggest to have surgery to correct the problem. I do realize that there are many more problems than cataracts but if that is the problem you would be amazed what can be done for that.

terneral, I know exactly what you are saying, I have the same problem, even have a red dot on the shotgun, The scope makes cleaning a little more chalanging if you are not removing it but not not so much as to make me give up the pleasure of shooting my TC Hawken,so we get old, so we give up some stuff, but in this case just , adapt and overcome, & keep stuffing lead down the front of that rifle! The pleasure justifies the effert.Either way I hope it works out for you.

I have two, a .50 TC Omega that is scoped and a .50 Lyman Deerstalker. The Lyman is equipped with a 28" 1-28" twist Green Mountain barrel, a LYMAN receiver sight and has been converted to using musket caps for ignition. I just bought a pound of Alliant Black MZ, which I want to try in both but mainly the Lyman.

If you don't have a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, niece, nephew or someone else you would consider worthy of receiving your Hawkin, you might check around some of your local youth orginizations such as Boy Scouts or 4H, and see if they would be in need of the firearm. Don't necessarily ask on the local troop level, but check at the council level with the Outdoor Sports Director or find out who their local NRA Training counselor is and contact him (or her).

While packing tonight for Shiloh I thought of this post as I loaded gun after gun after gun...  My Equinox has 400 rounds (blanks), about 800 caps, 'Clar Innis', my Enfield, 2 unit loaner Enfields, an 1861 Springfield, an original Lorenz and an 1809 Virginia-Contract musket tucked into the layers of tents, blankets, uniforms and dresses.  I am ready I think.

This one was a lot of people's favorite rifle to hate due to misfires. My Remington 700ML (28" barrel) is topped off with a Leupold VX-I and charged with 2 50gr Pyrodex pellets under a Powerbelt 295 gr all copper conical. I still use the #12 primer and never had a misfire since I bought it in 2006. I think clean and dry is the magical combination. I have this one sighted at zero at 100 yards with a clean barrel - no fouling shots. Very accurate, very reliable.

CVA Optima Pro Magnum 50 cal. inline with a Simmons 3x9 on top.  I know.  Cheap scope.  But, it works.  The only scope mounts I could find for it were  the see through  kind.  I really don't like them.  Although its kinda cool that if I have a close shot.  I can use the iron sights instead of the scope.  Only problem is that it puts the scope really high above the line of the barrel.

Savage Muzzleloader

I thought I would share what I consider an amazing event for me.

On January 6, 2012 I had fired my Savage ML1, 4 times to check the rifles zero before going hunting with it that year. My loading data was as follows: MMP Sabot, Winchester 209 Primer, 49gr of Reloader #7, Nosler Partition Hand Gun .451 dia. 300gr JPP bullet (45350). This combination produces a muzzle velocity of approx. 1837 fps. I did not harvest a deer with the Savage that muzzleloader season. I removed the 209 primer and placed the rife into my gun safe. On January 8, 2013 I took my Savage ML1 out for a hunt. (The load had been in the Savage ML for 1 year and 2 days) On that date at approx. 0941 hours I harvest a deer at approx. 120 yards (Lecia rangefinder used to verify) The bullet made contact near the base of the deer's neck. A bit to right side of the deer. (My wavering as I was shooting from a unsupported sitting positron). The bullet broke the deers right shoulder passed through the body and ended up just below the skin of the left mid thigh. The bullet had traveled approx. 31 inches through the deer. Upon extracting the bullet I discovered the bullet had retained a awsume mushroom shape. Latter using a scale both a RCBS 10-10 scale and a Pact electronic scale discovered the bullet still weighted 300 gr. Amazing. The lead portion above the partition had separated but was still in the cup. The brass pedals had flared out as intended. Again awsume performance of the Savage and Nosler bullet.
