Total 264 122 55 36 35 77 589

Stokes State Forest in NW NJ at 9:30AM on Saturday 12/11/10.  This Bear had an estimated live weight of 300 pounds.  It dressed out at 260.  It was taken with one shot to the heart at 75 yards from a Savage Bolt Action 12 gauge 210F slug gun with a fully rifled barrel and a Nikon 2x7 scope.  The ammo was a  Lightfield Hybrid Sabot Slug.

The bear took one jump and died 10 yards from where it was shot.  It will become nice rug for my home in the Catskills.

For me it did.

I think the state was hoping for about 700 total in the take, but only got 591.

Guys, the magazine will be publishing my bear hunt story, along with my story of the long legal and political ordeal of the bear hunters in NJ.  I hope you guys read it in the April/May issue.  I would also love to get your feedback on it.
Thanks

Thanks Guys.  I'm 10 minutes from East Brunswick.  The area has gotten very congested and I'm looking forward to my retirement in the Catskills.  The Savage Bolt Shotguns with fully rifled barrels are like rifles in their accuracy.  I think it is excellent as far as slug guns go.  It has the 60 degree bolt lift and mounting a scope low over the bore is easy to do.  The trigger is pretty good too.  Surprising for a shotgun.

Congrats on the bear. Did you get the rug back yet? I have plenty of bears on my land I just never got the urge yet to hunt them. They usually are all over my place in NJ during Turkey season: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/1776Flintlock/MDGC0049.jpg

Thanks.  The rug is going to take until July to get back.  The tannery is very busy and the taxidermist will be busy when all of the hides get back from the tannery.

I think you will find fewer bears in north Jersey during this year's turkey hunts.

I look forward to seeing pics of the rug and mount. No worry about the bears on my place. Large property and only I hunt there. Those dopes don't wander too far.

Nice Bear!

Your fist?

Keep the skull and boil it out. Makes a nice trophy in addition to the rug.

Thanks.  Yep, first one.  The story of my ten year ordeal trying to hunt bear in NJ will detail all of the legal and political obstacles Jersey bear hunters had to put up with to hunt them.  I did send the skull out for a bug box cleaning.  I'll post pictures when I get everything back.

I got the copy of the May/April 2011 mag today and they printed the story of my bear hunt.  But in the magazine they printed the political history and news part of my story and put the story of the hunt in the Web Extras section of this NAHC web site.  Here's the story of the hunt from the web site so you don't have to look for it.

http://portal.huntingclub.com/articles/articletype/articleview/articleid/13097/failure-to-communicate-continued

The story in the magazine is good, but it's more history and news, than hunting story.  Let me know what you all think.  Enjoy!

That's the way it ought to be done! Knowledge of the area, scouting, shot placement, and with the anti's know where to be seen!!!

Nice Job!

Thanks Guys!
I got the call from the taxidermist yesterday.  The rug is done!  They said it's 6 1/2 feet from tip of nose to tail and it looks great!  I can't wait to get up there to pick it up, but can't make it until 4/21.  I'll post pics as soon as I get it.

Normally the rug will square out (6 and half nose to tail, will be 6 and a half claw to claw.) That's a big bear! Congrats again!!!

Sometimes life only gives you one shot.  At those times, everything has to work perfectly.  I'm proud to say Lightfield slugs did a great job when I needed them to.  I'm proud I was asked to endorse them in their ads.  This ad is from Bear Hunting Magazine's Sept/Oct 2012 issue.
