My son will be going on his first whitetail hunt this year with a rifle.
I want to let him use the first gun I shot a deer with.  A winchester
model 94 30-30.
Him being 8 years old I am worried about the recoil.
Has anyone on here tried the reduced recoil loads from Remington?
Thanks for the help.

I tried the .30-06 loads in my Savage 110, and it didn't like them so I went back to the Winchesters. Actually, none of my rifles like any thing except Winchester, I've tried Hornady, Federal, and Remington but none of them are as consistent with any of my rifles. You may find that your model 94 will actually prefer them, since most guns are different.

Either way, congrats for getting your young man started. My boy killed his first deer when he was 8 or 9.

I started my daughter on them last year in her .308. They worked well in her Marlin XS7. They do recoil a bit less than regular .308 loads.

Well, we are going to try the 125 gr. load in the 30-30
It should be fine out to 100 yards I would think.
We have about a month to prepare till his youth hunt.
Time to start useing the hunting gun instead of the pellet gun
and 22.  He is very excited. Thanks

try using the LeveRevelution ammo for the 30-30. It shoots a flatter trajectory and keep a tighter pattern than the reg. 30-30 ammo.

We sighted in last night with them.
My son could feel the kick some.
Next time we will wear thicker clothes.
The bullets grouped well. I could barely feel the recoil myself.
We will keep practicing and see how things go.

I started my nephew out on a .223 bolt action, he cleaned everyones record the first year. proper shot placement make this a great rifle for youth to use.

Ken, you must have limited him to some short range shots. I started Travis with a .243, but kept him limited to no more than 75 yards. I've seen people who say they've consistently killed deer with .223 and .243, but from personal knowledge of hunters who've tried those cartridges they had to be super excellent marksmen and only on close shots. Personally I think the .7mm-08 ( that's what Travis has now) or even a .308 is a much better choice, but that's just my opinion and we all know about opinions and their correlation to the anus!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally use a 7mm-08 for most of my deer hunting.
It is excellent for other than the longer shots.
I have seen people shoot deer with the 223 and have had to follow those
deer in the woods for quite awhile.  At least some of them.
243 with handloads works fairly well.
We will stick with the 30-30 at least for his first deer. Or if I find out
he cant shoot it accurately.  Wait and see.  So far so good.

The 30-30 will work fine as long as you keep up the practice so he can put the bullet where it needs to be. When moving from the 30-30 I would also agree and suggest the 7MM-08 as it is a fine round with mild recoil and it has proven itself many times over in the woods killing deer. I am a big advocate of practice makes a better shot so shoot as much as your finances will allow and then practice some more ! I have fired by now hundreds of thousands of rounds when you combine my before Army, during service, after service, and I also shoot in LRRP matches. With all this shooting I still always spend time at the range shooting as much as I can. If you do not I would suggest you look into reloading as it is a big cost effective " hobby " to get into and it does not take to long before your initial investment is paid back and then the future savings is just money in your pocket. It is also a great feeling to shoot your own reloads especially when you are killing deer !!!

Nothing  wrong with a 30-30 as long as bullet placement is good. I have seen a 30-30 ricochet off the hip bone on a large Ontario buck before. A lot of deer have been killed with them and a lot have been lost also. My pick for a youth rifle would be a 44 magnum- next to no kick and tremendous knockdown power out to 100 yards. The Ruger deerstalker is a fantastic gun if you can find one but they are semi-auto- not the best for a newbie. Marlin and Winchester both made levers which would be better for the young lad. If he wants to go bear hunting there is no comparison between the 2 rounds. Good news getting the young lad out and we all hope he's successful this year

I plan on giving him my 7mm-08 after he shoots his first deer or two.
I shot my first deer with the 30-30 so I figured it would be good to have him do it also.
I was several years older at the time though.
I do reload but did not have the 30-30 die's and did not feel like I needed to get them for how little it is shot.
His younger brother could also use it so maybe I will get them.
We took two shots last night at 50 yards and both bullets in a 3-4 inch group at fity yards.
One month to go and looking good.

ALOT of deer have fallen to the 30-30. As long as he cn handle it comfortably and be consistant go for it.
