Thinking about purchasing a HR Pardner 20 gauge for my
granddaughter to hunt turkey with. Has anyone tried one
Of these with turkey loads?

yeah great gun....try a 6 shot....aim at the right spot ...and there you have it....normallay a head shot... If you like picking out shot...then center mass ..(I dont recomend..this...good luck.

Due to the design of the stock and the light weight of the single shot break action shotguns, they kick hard. If you're looking for something youth sized, take a look at the Remington 870 Youth or Compact. or the Mossburg 500 or 510 Super Bantam. They even make them in pink for her.

I have a H&R Pardner pump action, camo finish, 20 ga that I won at a Turkey Federation banquet and it will do a job on turkeys. You did not say what action you have, but the pump action is heavy enough that grandkids do not notice the "kick". I would think if your shotgun is a single barrel one, the "kick" would be greater. I have taken turkeys out to 38 yards, but always tried to keep my shots at 35 yards and less. Mine looks just like a Rem 870

I am and have been a big fan of this brand of firearms and own one of their Handi-Rifles chambered in 45/70 and also a 12ga pump with the 18" barrel. I sent the rifle back and had them fit a .44 mag barrel to match my .44 mag sidearm. They are both great firerams especially for the price at which they can be purchased. You don't mention age or size, weight so I'm going on this bit of info and would suggest if possible find someone who owns one and ask that they let you borrow it and let her shoot it to se how she reacts. I will tell you that the single shot break open models do tend to have a rather stiff recoil so you might want to go with one of the pump models. Keep us posted if you would as to which one you end up buying for her.

I have to agree with these guys while the guns are well made and function great that li'l brake action kicks like a 5 legged mule..'specially when using hot loads like those made for turkeys...even in the 20 ga mods, pumps are better as the have more weight (with the exception of LWs and ULWs) any of those pumps mentioned are great and can grow with them by adding longer buttstocks...the short barrel will also help if the youngster is vertically challenged and lighter weight...start with reduced loads...seen to many kids turned off cause pop thought it funny to have'em knock on their ear by shooting heavy loads in a gun that's just not suited for them...

 

I have to agree with the others. My daughters had trouble just thumbing the hammer back. I finally bought a mossberg 20 in pink camo. She picked it out because of the color. I paid for it because it was a really good fit. Neither of us have regretted it.

Started my 6yr old out with a 410. It was a lil long and took many rounds for him to get use to it. What ever you go with make sure it fits them.
