In our area that we hunt there are guys who say they are meat hunters but will shoot a fork horn buck who may weigh 100 lbs driping wet when there is a 200 lb+ doe standing right there with him .Why cant thease guys understand that if you let that little buck grow up he may turn into the kind of trophy we all dream of .You can't eat the horns let them grow up and don't say if i let him go someone else will shoot him .I tell them it starts with just 1 guy telling another maybe it could change .It takes a biger man to let thwm go an maybe grow into the next record buck !!!!!!!!!!!

I don't disagree with you but here in idaho we don't always have the option of shooting a doe

Yep, it all depends on the laws in the different states and the zones within those states. There may not be a legal means to take a doe until a much later date, if at all. There may also be an overpopulation of fork horn bucks that need to be culled from the herd in some instances, as well. I know I had to kill several deer that had a fork on one side and a spike on the other, in order to get those genetics out of my herd. Then I've also killed smaller bucks that for whatever reason, I couldn't tell how small they were.

Yep. Some states have different seasons. PA used to when I was young, not sure these days. In NY, there are different tags for horns and no horns. So maybe that was the case and the guy already had a 200 pound doe in the freezer. No one rule for every situation.

just a thought ,if you kill a doe you not only kill her but any chances she might have had at birthing future bucks.therefore one could make a case that you are the foolish one.like I said , just something to ponder on.

Can you guys read I said here in ohio .Where you can shoot a buck or a doe and becouse of guys like i mentioned if you ever see a buck 3+years old you are verry lucky!!! In our area it is commen to see groups of 10 to 20 does in one section .As far as the comment about taking a doe you may damage the chance of her producing a monster buck by the time she is that big she has already had several offspring !! It has been provin that if you have an over population of does your heard quality starts to decline .As for the guy who said what if you already have one in the freazer that still dont justife shooting a little first rack buck !!!!!!!To the guy who said he couldn't tell how big the buck was I SURE HOPE YOU DON'T HUNT IN ANY WOODS I AM IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not sure were ya'll hunt in the big Buckeye, but I have killed deer there that were spikers that weighed 250# feild dressed...some of the most consistant large deer come from Ohio...secondly no one that I know of died and made you the King of deer kills...so get off it.

Two Tails you are missing my point dont say your a meat hunter when you only care if it has horns on it you cant eat the horns !!!!!!!!!!! I dont care if you wanna shoot that little half grown buck but dont try to justify it by saying im a meat hunter ! All i am tring to do is make the deer better for everyone if you are in ohio then you should know the overpopulation we are facing in ohio in some counties .

You said any were and we were just giving you our opinion on that .So if you only want answers for Ohio ,go to the Ohio state section with that question about how stupid the hunters are .And yes some of us OLD FARTS can't see so good any more .So just wait until you get that way .Then we will see how you answer that .

One buck can service anywere from 20--30 does dureing the rut. So ya kill a buck, that means the next guy may have the pleasure of serviceing 40--50 does, dureing the next rut. However, if ya shoot a doe, how many future deer have ya eliminated?? With the twin rate being a average of 65% in our area, if that doe has another 4 good years in her, then ya have eliminated a minimum of 7 deer out of the future hunts!
We are allowed to harvest one doe for subsistance. I can find enuff bucks that I don't shoot does!

In Mi. we have a large deer herd and the DNR wants the herd culled in spots. I'm a meat hunter so shooting a doe when I have tags is no problem. I also let small bucks pass. I shoot at bucks that are 6 points or better. All this comes from KNOWING your area and doing what is right for the area. So in a way I understand you BUT calling hunters dumb is not a good thing. My 2 cents

Since I'm not in Ohio, and based on the wording of the question, I gave an honest answer. Many times when hunting in the thick swamp, especially when running deer with dogs, it's impossible to tell how big or how small a deer may be. Also, I've been killing deer for over 50 years, and of the 300+ deer I've killed, most have been bucks because up until about 10 0r 12 years ago, we couldn't kill does but one day per year in my game zone of SC. Now we have to have purchase tags, and we can only purchase 4 per year. We also have 12 or 13 antlerless days per year, based on what day Jan.1st falls on. When I hunt an average of 7 days per week from August 15th to Jan. 1st. and I can't kill any antlerless deer until Sept. 15th, I often kill a smaller than normal buck for the freezer. See, unlike most folks, we actually do live off of venison and small game in my house. I practice a version of QDM on my property where I still hunt, so the does I do kill have been selectively picked based on trail camera pictures and sightings during the season. Most of the does in my herd will have two fawns per year, after their first year (two fawns aren't always twins, since unlike humans, does actually can produce offspring from both fallopian tubes after one egg has been fertilized. In effect, does can actually have 4 fawns which would then be two separate sets of twins fathered by two different bucks), through the use of trail cameras, I can identify which does are no longer producing and thus eliminate them which helps to grow the herd. If I have an overabundance of bucks, many of them will leave my property and get killed on the roads, by poachers, or other hunters in the area; so I often cull smaller bucks in order to keep the mature breeding bucks on the property.

I hardly consider killing young bucks "dumb" for my particular area. What you may perceive as dumb in Ohio, may actually be very good herd management down here in SC's low country.
