Well I finaly took my first whitetail this year but it wasnt one I would have normaly shot. After having problems in the first part of bow season in NC ( hiting a limb, and a old shoulder injury coming back to bite me in mid-draw) I was looking forward to muzzleloader week. I decided to hunt a new stand area , one that a buddy of mine had set up on his property and see if it could change my luck . He had told me about a few nice bucks in the area he had seen , the only reason he wasnt hunting there was he was after a big boy on anther piece of property that had stayed out of bow range so far this season. So I was set up in the stand before day break. I had spooked one walking in but that couldnt be helped now. Once lite hit the area started to come alive, squirrels and turkey where all around and it was looking like it mit be a good day . around 1130 my buddy that owed the land sent a text msg to my phone and asked if id seen anything, and that the wind was blowing to hard down on the other property to stay in the stand , lucky for me theres was really no wind. But when I replyed to him that I hadnt seen anything yet he responded that we mit be better off going and walking some old apple orchards and hay fields that few people hunt beause there so far back and me having a Ranger RZR it wouldnt be a problem for us to get back there. at around 1230 am he msg me again saying he was at the end of the road leading to where I was set up. Normally I'll stay in the stand all day but this being his property I figuered he knew what he was talking about when he said there wouldnt be much movment if any for the rest of the day at this stand so I got my things together and lowered down my muzzleloader. Just as I was started to climb down I looked down to the other in of the field I was sitting on and then I seen him. So happy to see a deer come in I graded the rope and pulled my muzzleloader back up in the stand. put a cap back on and seening he was on the other side of the field I grabed my phone and texted my buddy back telling him I had one in site. I graded my binos and started to look him over , first thing I noticed was he was a small young buck with spikes just legal, so I started scanning the field edges for more deer , after a while of scanning I determined he was a loner. At this time I turned my attention back to him, then I noticed how unusaul he was acting. He was walking as if he was going to fall down any moment. He kept his head down low to the ground but he wasnt eating he was just walking as if in a daze. As he came closer he turned around and gave me a look at his back side and then I seen it. From my view in the binos it looked as if some one back shot this little guy square in the rump with bird shot at point blake range . he was torn up something bad. I then texted my buddy back and told him what Id seen and he told me if I thought it was to bad to go ahead and put it out of its misery. I watched him until he came within 30 yards or so and just the look of the poor boy told me it was the right thing to do . So I took aim and droped him right where he stood. Shortly after the shot as I was geting out of the stand my friend showed up and went over to the deer. He looked at it and yelled back at me , SOME ONE SHOT THIS POOR THING IN THE ASS WITH A BROADHEAD! Sure enough after looking at it closely you could see some one had shot it as it was walking away and the arrow had passed just above his bawals and had split the hide open as well as cut down thru its buttucs . With a closer look we found that it had three testicles, leading us to believe there mit have been some inbreeding took place. My buddy told me he was glad to have it removed from the property after discovering the deform but that he didnt think it would have lasted to long anyway with as many coyotes running around. It wasnt what I was looking for but It was the right thing to do.

You did the right thing. I had a similar thing happen a few years ago... I was watching a BIG 9 point chacing a bunch of doe's as they got closer the lead doe was digging at her side, when she turned around I could see a piece of an arrow sticking out of her sholder, It wasn't bleeding but I could see it was hurting her. So I took a look at the buck and thought "today is your lucky day" I cocked my 444 marline and dropped the doe. When I brought her into the check station they asked were I was hunting and when I told then they enformed me that, that area is buck only... Witch I knew. when I showed the DEP officer the arrow he said I did the right thing..... And so did you.

I don't know about the rules where your at but here in NY if you called the CO he would probably have said deer was unfit to eat taken it and issued you a new tag on the spot. gutpile

Definitely the right thing to do. I still have flashbacks to hunting my doe Pronghorn with my Dad last year (200 and we came upon a wounded doe not using her right front leg... It didn't look recent & may have just been broken. Either way I set my mind to take her once she got under the fence to my family's property... but when she did she saw me and bolted down over a hill. Figuring she couldn't get too far I ran the fence line to still try and catch her but when I crested it just a minute or so later, she was already three-quarters of a mile away across the bottom! Those Pronghorn's can still move exceptionally-well... even with one flat-tire! And I never did catch up with her again... “Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself! Good to hear that they did the right thing with your situation at the check-in station. Your right in both situations it was the right thing to do. But I wont lie I didnt have a nice buck infront of me to sway me in either direction. But i knew there were a few nice ones in the area.

In N.C. were I was hunting we have 6 tags per year so the tag wasnt a big deal. The week wasnt turning out that good at all . and it was the last day of muzzle loader I would be able to hunt this year. I was on a new stand and had a good chance of seeing a good buck according to my buddy which the stand belonged to.

nothing new to add, it was the right thing to do. its the side of us that the media and anti's will never know/believe or understand. number one obligation is to keep the animals in our stewardship from as much suffering as we can. props to you man
