Since I purchased the farm 10 years ago, it seems the coyote population in the Southeast has exploded as fast as Larry’s belt buckle at an all-you-can-eat China buffet. At first, coyote sightings were a novelty around the farm. We were used to seeing them on Saturday morning cartoons and in Native American folklore, but we really knew nothing about them. Their arrival brought more questions than answers. What effect will these dogs have on the deer herd? How do these adaptive predators fit into the overall land management equation?

Shed antler hunting is a game we take seriously at the farm. We learn a lot from the time we spend in the woods looking for antlers, which taunted us all season long. For example, every year I learn my old eyes ain’t what they used to be. I have also learned that no matter how much thought and effort I put into making a deer antler necklace (the only acceptable reason for a man to look at Pinterest), my wife prefers something a little shinier on Valentine’s Day. But most importantly, we learn more about the land we manage.

OK, folks ... we've almost completed our first full month of 2013. If you're as serious about deer hunting, land management and good times afield as I am, your New Year’s resolutions probably don't follow the script of non-hunters.

Watch the first episode of Jeff Foxworthy: Inside & Out, and you'll see the competition to harvest more deer between the Kill Billys and Thump Monkeys is fierce. However, our will to beat our rivals doesn't mean we're shooting every deer that walks by our stand.

I love it when fellow hunters come up to me in public and say, “I know you ... I saw you hunting on TV.” But almost always, the next thing out of their mouths is, “How in the heck did you miss that deer?”
