If I couldn’t laugh, I wouldn’t want to go hunting.

Little does it matter where I'm going or what I'm hunting ... I know I'm about to have a good time with friends. The camaraderie and the moments of deer camp over the years are kind of like the bedrock of my life.
My grandparents had a farm, and growing up I knew there was always a place for me to wet a fishing line or climb a tree.

I’ll tell you, as I learn more and more about land management and deer behavior, I can’t help but see the similarities between a deer’s mentality and a human's. For example, when we find a restaurant we like, we keep going back. Deer are no different; when they find a food source that meets both their nutritional needs and tastes like it came from a Paula Deen recipe book for deer, they're hooked. The combination of taste and nutritional value is the philosophy behind Deer Trac—a new product that Foxworthy Outdoors and Helena Chemical Company have teamed up to create. Deer Trac makes any existing plant food source healthier, better tasting and more palatable.

Last weekend I was going over the checklist of work that still needs to be done at the farm before opening day: Buy urine to create mock scrapes on trail from bedding area to bean field; apply Deer Trac to food plot next to corn field in back corner; etc.

As I think back to my first season of bowhunting, I remember being unsure of myself. I let all of the negatives dominate my thoughts. Will I get a shot off? Will I miss? What if I just wound it? I was the rookie, and all of my hunting buddies wouldn’t let me forget it. I knew they were just messing with me, but they had no idea how unsure of myself I really was.

We joke around at Foxworthy Farm about how the deer eat better than my family. After buying the land, which was managed for quail, one of the first steps toward transforming the great quail hunting land into amazing deer hunting land was to implement a food plot program that would provide optimal nutrition for the deer herd. After a few years of trying different things, we have established an excellent program to hold and attract mature whitetails with food plots.
