Last week I was at a buddy’s house watching hunting shows, and when an ad for Hornady Ammunition hit the flat-screen, I spotted myself pulling the trigger.

In 2005 a buddy of mine asked if we could bring his 15-year-old son on a turkey hunt to one of my favorite hotspots in South Dakota. Alex had been taught by his dad how to shoot shotguns and rifles (and he’d completed MN’s firearms safety training), but he’d never hunted before.

Bowhunting whitetails is like a game of poker, and each decision you make has consequences. Should you be cautious and bowhunt only the fringe of a buck’s home range? Should you be aggressive and try rattling? Or ... gulp! ... try a deer drive/push?

Place your bets: What would happen if a black bear (wild) gained entrance into a candy store? It’d be ugly (as in total-destruction messy), correct?

Thankfully, I know that no matter the weather, turkeys usually act like turkeys. Proof of that can be found in this YouTube video featuring Todd Varner and Jason Cue. Opening day 2012 in West Virginia greeted them with an inch of snow, but they didn’t let a little bad weather ruin a good day.
