Not all hunting boots are created equal, and rubber hunting boots occupy a class of their own. A good pair of rubbers need to fit right from your ankles down to your toes. They need to do a solid job of fighting off scent. They also need to be totally waterproof and stand up to poking sticks, jagged rocks and barbed wire. I hate to admit it, but I'm only willing and able to spend a limited amount of time waterfowl hunting these days. I'd love to devote more fall and winter days chasing ducks and geese, but I'm already spreading myself thin with big game, turkeys and as much ruffed grouse as I can fit in. Two years ago I was visiting my family's 80-acre property during the dead of winter and stumbled across an antler tip protruding through the deep snow. He's always willing to push the limits to shape epic days afield. During a recent bowhunting trip he happened upon some ruffed grouse and pulled a wild maneuver: He killed a ruffed grouse with his bare hands.

It's never too early to begin thinking about spring gobblers. I never stop. Thoughts of strutting, lovesick longbeards linger in my mind all year long. So, you'd better believe I was super stoked when I received word today about the latest development in the Avian-X line of Lifelike Collapsible Decoys (LCD): the Strutter.

At the end of this week I'll leave the Midwestern whitetail rut behind for my first-ever Western big game hunt. I'm feeling a mix of anxiety, nervousness and excitement for this high-elevation pursuit, but thankfully I'm confident in my rifle setup.
