Hunting with Bill Miller

Thanksgiving is the holiday that has the most hunting traditions surrounding it. In Wisconsin where I grew up, Thanksgiving week was deer hunting week … period.  I hope this Thanksgiving finds you hunting with family and friends, and relishing the American hunting heritage.

This season is turning into a very good year for me on the whitetail front. Buck No. 3 fell this week in the Porcupine Hills of southern Alberta, Canada.

It’s that time of the year. We’re creating new memories to last a lifetime and new stories to share with good friends. So with the “North American Hunter-TV” camera rolling, I took my second buck of the season. This one completed the challenge of taking two bucks in two states (Montana and Wyoming) during one trip.

As you read this I’m sitting in a deer stand in northeastern Wyoming waiting for a buck to show up … whitetail or mule deer … doesn’t matter. The tag in my pocket is good for either. On Sunday afternoon, just north of the state line in Montana, I saw my first buck of the season who was showing interest in does. So I shot him.

My wife does a great job of watching out for me. She does a better job of keeping me healthy than I do! She also does a great job of  keeping me informed about health and vitality, so it was no surprise when I found a page she’d torn from Experience Life magazine sitting on top of my “stack of stuff” at home. The circled news article is titled, “How Forests Boost Immunity.”

I went duck hunting locally over the weekend by myself; just me and the dog. Weather was unseasonably warm so it was pretty slow. I bagged a couple local mallards on a public hunting area by slogging back to a spot that’s seldom hunted.

It’s the complexity of waterfowl hunting that makes it so appealing to me. There’s so much to it ... decoys, blinds, calling, shooting skills, dogs, on-the-wing identification, strategy, location, planning, preparation, and on and on and on.

I just got back from my first waterfowl hunt of the season in a place I’d dreamed of hunting for many years—the Peace River Region of northern Alberta. It’s a l-o-n-g way up there, but the distance somehow makes it even more desirable as a hunting destination.

Just like it does for you, the off-season gets l-o-n-g for the "North American Hunter-TV (NAH-TV)" team! This year it drove us all pretty much stir crazy.
