I had to interrupt the whitetail season for mule deer opportunities. Last week I was in Idaho hunting both whitetails and mule deer. Today, I'm en route to Colorado, specifically targeting muleys.

The best whitetail hunting of the year is occurring right now through the first 10 days of November. It doesn't matter if you're armed with a firearm, bow or muzzleloader ... now is the time to be out and after those crazy whitetails. And don't forget the muleys, either—they also tend to get goofy this time of year.

My wife does a great job of watching out for me. She does a better job of keeping me healthy than I do! She also does a great job of  keeping me informed about health and vitality, so it was no surprise when I found a page she’d torn from Experience Life magazine sitting on top of my “stack of stuff” at home. The circled news article is titled, “How Forests Boost Immunity.”

I'm still whitetail-less in Wyoming, but it's not for lack of trying. I'm hunting with Brian Beisher at Big Buck Outfitters literally in my backyard. As my previous blog explained, October whitetails can be finicky. That finicky character, along with a full moon, has definitely has been trying my whitetail patience.

Move over, Rod Blagojevich. You’ve got company. Biologists and pest control operators say they’ve never seen as many skunks in Illinois as they have this year, and that’s not even counting the infamous politicians often associated with the Windy City.

I went duck hunting locally over the weekend by myself; just me and the dog. Weather was unseasonably warm so it was pretty slow. I bagged a couple local mallards on a public hunting area by slogging back to a spot that’s seldom hunted.

Unfortunately, all the moose are still on the loose in Ontario. Our hunt was difficult at best, but the reward would’ve been amazing on film had it happened. It did for our camp mate, however—a bowhunter from Wisconsin.

It’s the complexity of waterfowl hunting that makes it so appealing to me. There’s so much to it ... decoys, blinds, calling, shooting skills, dogs, on-the-wing identification, strategy, location, planning, preparation, and on and on and on.

Have you ever wished to be the shooter on a major hunting show? It’s really a trip, and something I never thought I’d be doing mid-way in my career. But in reality it’s not always hunting. It really is a combination of hunting and producing, and often the two collide.
