I was nervous the other day. I mean I was nail-biting, ulcer-style nervous. I was down to the last day on a hunt and I still had not found the buck to fit my “shooter” category and finish another TV show. On the last morning I slipped in to a field edge at dawn.

Are you having trouble locating mature bucks? Me too. It’s lockdown time. What, you haven’t heard about the lockdown period of the whitetail rut? It’s the time of November when the majority of does come into heat in the majority of the whitetail nation.

The weather was brutal, but began to settle enough to spark rutting activity, especially at dawn and dusk. We used mules and horses to access backcountry. They are quiet, and you can even ride up to the elk and deer for a face-to-face view of the critters.

It’s that time of the year. We’re creating new memories to last a lifetime and new stories to share with good friends. So with the “North American Hunter-TV” camera rolling, I took my second buck of the season. This one completed the challenge of taking two bucks in two states (Montana and Wyoming) during one trip.

As you read this I’m sitting in a deer stand in northeastern Wyoming waiting for a buck to show up … whitetail or mule deer … doesn’t matter. The tag in my pocket is good for either. On Sunday afternoon, just north of the state line in Montana, I saw my first buck of the season who was showing interest in does. So I shot him.
