Back To Nebraska

I told you my Ford F150 was headed back to Nebraska and my trip wrapped up with a great hunt that was a nail biter. I hooked up with Eric and Shannon Ravenscroft at SBG Hunts in the Sandhills of north-central Nebraska. Eric and Shannon take a minimal amount of hunters on the family ranch, but what a ranch it is.

Richard Lomas was hunting near the Little Wabash River in southern Illinois on December 2 when he scored on a wild-looking 30-point non-typical whitetail—what he figured was a buck of a lifetime. Upon further examination, he discovered his trophy was missing the “plumbing” necessary to fully qualify as a male of the species.

Here’s a quick update from Nebraska, where I’m still in hot pursuit of cold-weather bucks. The hunt started out good, but the weather the past few days has made it challenging at best. Toss in the fact that the bucks are paranoid, and you have extreme hunting at its best.

I'm off and running again with muzzleloader hunts back to back all the way to Christmas. Hunting can be downright difficult in December as bucks crash after the rut like a marathoner after a race. As you read this I'm already hunting in Nebraska, and hopefully I'm getting a small break with late-rutting action. When that dies down, it's all about weather.
