YouTube is full of stupid people doing stupid things, and maybe I’ve showcased some of them on this blog. This video, however, is not one of them.

Check out Hickok45, an extremely popular and well-respected YouTube gun reviewer, showing how NOT to shoot a revolver. Perhaps you recently bought a snub-nose revolver for personal protection, or a larger-framed revolver for home defense. In any case, it pays to learn the proper shooting technique to avoid injuring yourself.

Note: Hickok45 began posting videos on YouTube 5 years ago, and to date has more than 750 videos available. He has 413,000-plus subscribers to his YouTube channel, with total video views numbering over 121 million! The video above has been viewed more than 537,000 times, and you just added to that total.

What I like about Hickok45 is he’s very knowledgeable, but also humble. And he’s responsible.

I highly recommend you check out his many fine videos; you can type in whatever topic you’re looking for in the “search” feature of his YouTube channel, or simply browse his videos by popularity, date, etc.

P.S. Hickok45 received some viewer comments regarding this video that claimed the paper damage was due to muzzle blast and not cylinder gap gas escape. So, he recently conducted the experiment again with a longer-barreled handgun. Watch the video by clicking here. In my book, Hickok45 is the man.

Great information. We have several younger and some mature but inexperienced shooters learning how to shoot here and this will be a great demo for the safe handling and firing of revolvers. Fantastic example of the power and physics behind handgun ammo.

Thank you for the video. I prefer shooting revolvers and along the way have made the mistake of wrapping my non shooting hand around the front of trigger guard. Though I was not hurt much, it was enough to inform me that this was not a good practice. The hot partials in bedded into my skin and burned like someone put a torch to me.
Blast from being aside a revolver shooter is also a good point that you covered. being slightly forward position of anyone shooting beside you is chance of blast from the mussel (end of barrel) as well, and can be more painful than being beside a revolver shooter.
My point is, use good knowledge, common sense, and learn to get the most out of your shooting experience or any other activity that you wish to get involved in.

Great info, but your demonstration is flawed. By putting the target paper ahead of the muzzle, the muzzle blast alone would blow the paper away. If you want to accurately demonstrate the effect of pressure out the cylinder gap, leave your paper behind the muzzle but beside the gap between the cylinder and the barrel.

I hunt deer with both a .44 and a .454. I could have sent you a left-handed glove or two from my early days that would also have illustrated your point. I started wearing heavier gloves- just in case "deer fever" clouded my awareness of where my support hand was.
