Jeff Foxworthy: Resolutions I Can Keep

By: Jeff Foxworthy

Jan 27

OK, folks ... we've almost completed our first full month of 2013. If you're as serious about deer hunting, land management and good times afield as I am, your New Year’s resolutions probably don't follow the script of non-hunters.

Sure, we can all probably stand to lose a few pounds and quit those bad habits and start living better. These resolutions are a formality. It's the list I recite to wife when she asks how I'm going to change my ways this year. But sneakily, in the corner of my mind, there's another list—one that's far more important and more fun than those trivial things—filled with the lessons of the past season, hope for the next one and the fun to be had in-between.

Watching the highlight reel from the first season of Jeff Foxworthy: Inside & Out gave me plenty to laugh, cry and kick myself about. (Resolution No. 1: Get better at dancing.) I'm sure you had similar reactions when you replayed the highlights (and lowlights) of your hunting season. I believe if you want to get better at anything in life, you need to reflect on what you’re doing right, what you are doing wrong and the adjustments needed to be made to improve you odds of success in the woods.

At Foxworthy Outdoors, deer hunting and land management is a year-round pursuit. As soon as we say goodbye to another season, we're getting ready for the next. We hunt shed antlers. (Resolution No. 2: Buy some rubber snakes to tie on a shed from last year, plant it on a good trail around my brother’s stand, and then sit, watch and wait with a video camera.) We plant seeds and manicure the land to be a deer paradise. (Resolution No. 3: Plant a food plot and don't tell any of the other guys where it is.) And we take joy in all the other odds and ends: practicing at the bow range, hanging stands, collecting scouting cam pics and all the practical jokes. (Resolution No. 4: Buy plenty of hot pink paint to have on hand.)

The wick on the 2013 hunting year is burning, so be sure to keep up with this blog. Look back at your season and determine what you want to learn more about or get better at and leave your comments below. I am looking forward to sharing more about what we do and learn at the farm. Let’s take it outdoors and live it up! (Resolution No. 5: Remember that the reason for going to the woods is to have fun.)

hunting is so much more than shooting a deer, some of my best memories are from hunting camp, with good friends enjoying the outdoors and the comeraderie, you can have a good time without even bagging a deer

I truly believe that you have been blessed by the Lord. Your hunting setup is awesome and I truly enjoyed watching all of the episodes. I have only been hunting 6 yrs but I get so excited watching an animal being taken with a bow( what I consider the true hunting experience, because you have to out smart the animals senses to even have a chance at a shot. I am tired of guys around here sitting in their trucks and letting the dogs chase the deer out into a open field so then they step out of truck and shoot.I love to hear the dogs run but NOT run the deer to death and then someone steps out of truck and shoots it.The other problem is all of the hunt clubs suck up all of the good land and after 1 month deer pretty much go nocturnal. So very limited chance to get even a doe because you can have perfect setup and when your right there ready to shoot next thing you know dogs are all over your deer, even though dogs are not suppose to be on this property but surrounding property. The hunt club seems to drop dogs right on top of us so we have no chance.

I have a great amount of fun every year being in camp with family and friends even if I do not get a deer (which is rare). I love being in the field watching and listening to the fantastic sounds of nature and being with my son and grandchildren( ages 4 and 6) looking for that big boy walking in on us. Life is short and this makes it worth living. Next year I will have to have a triple bypass and a valve replacement, but my prayers are that I will still be able to be in the woods with these loved ones come hunting season. May God bless all and keep our second amendments alive and will. GOOD HUNTING!

jeff, just finished reading THE LULL, and iam proud to be a part of the north american hunting club. with your part in wounded warrior and hunt of a lifetime programs, we need to point out to the public that we as sportsmen are more than just out to kill animals.
