By: Gordy Krahn

Jan 17

Do you use a torque wrench to mount optics on your guns? You should. Wheeler Engineering offers an option specifically for gunsmithing called the F.A.T. (Firearm Accurizing Torque) Wrench. Watch the unboxing below and be sure to leave a comment.

I wish this torque wrench was have available 35 years ago. It would have kept me from putting dents in two different scope bodies; and stripping the threads, out of a base mounting screw hole, in the receiver of a good rifle.

Hi Gordy: when ever tighting screw or nut, on anything it is very easy to under or over torque screws. By keeping even holding pressure to keep it from moving is the best way to keep from having problem at the range or in the field. I would love to have one, Thanks a veteran and hunter.

The F.A.T. Wrench would fit any hunter's tool kit and outside of experienced gunsmiths, who know from experience "how tight" a screw is, the ordinary hunter has no substitute. Who, in their right mind, would use a two foot long standard torque wrench to work on a rifle? Nope! The F.A.T. Wrench is the answer.

Would be very nice to win this new tool. Would work well with the arsenal of tools I already have and going through classes with AGI to become a professional gun smith would come in really handy as a graduation present from their school. Even if I dont win it hopefully someone will buy it for me for a gradution present to start my business.

Maryanne all the way. Now as for the F.A.T wrench it seems to be a very good tool that I could use very much I an tinkering with scopes and tearing down to clean my rifles on a regular basis and I have never used a torque wrench on any of my guns. I bet using one could really help with my families accuracy.

The F.A.T. wrench would be the way to go. Many friends come to me to bore sight their scopes, and I don't charge. I haven't had a problem in ten years, but boy would it be nice if I had an extra piece of miind in my gun tool box!

its amazing how much torque you you can get on allen wrenches without really trying. my gunsmith would have preferred that i had one of these instead of just guessing. that way he wouldn't have to break loose the ones i had over-tightened. only good news was i never had a scope slip in the rings! would be a great start to the tools needed for the hobbyist.

I need this, Gordy. Adjustable from 10 to 65 inch pounds, it will cover all my needs from rings to bases to pillar bedding and my bow. It is compact to fit into my range box or bag for hunting. It includes 10 bits (#10, #11, and #32 hollow ground flat bits; 3/32 and 5/32 Allen bits; T10, T10, and T20 Torx bits; a Leupold/Buehler Windage Bit and a square drive adapter bit). But, if that is not enough, it is compatible with the entire range of Wheeler bits, most of which can be ordered individually. It seems to be pretty accurate -- plus or minus 2 inch pounds up to 40 inch pounds and plus or minus 5% over 40 inch pounds (e.g., plus or minus 3 inch pounds at 60 inch pounds. Manufacturing quality control testing (at 10, 30, and 60 inch pounds) results are included. Though it seems simple and easy to use, a two page instructions are also included. Only comparable product I could find was from Weaver with a Torque range of 10 to 80 inch pounds and 8 bits. Other adjustable torque screwdrivers cost about twice as much -- or more.

my family comes from a long line of rifle hunters, and has accumulated dozens of guns over the years. many of these guns have scopes and they have always been mounted with a simple wrench. If this tool works as well as people are suggesting, it would be a great addition to anyones gun station.

Have looked at this tool for a couple of years. On the christmas list twice (guess I needed a tie more lol). My 13 year old daughter and I have several projects going that this would be great for. Building her a 10/22 race rifle and she just got a TC Impact muzzleloader. Once she saves her pennies for a scope we will be mounting it on the new TC. I recently bought a 338 win mag in a classic Ruger M77, that beast really needs the leupold mounted right. I also mount several scopes a year for my Hunter ed students.

Hey guys and gals, thanks for all the comments. Great product. I went online and found the Fat Wrench as low as $41.46. Always watch the S&H charges, though. Some companies offer a lowball price and then gouge you on shipping.

And just to see if you're paying attention, I'm going to give this Fat Wrench away right here, right now, to the person who posts the most compelling argument for Ginger or Mary Anne by the end of this week.
# Alaskan Bob
Thursday, January 31, 2013 3:25 PM
Ginger or Mary Anne didn't need no Fat Wrench. In fact that's just wrong to use FAT in the same sentence with them two.

But the Skipper that's another story. :)

Mary Anne usually wins out over Ginger at about four-to-one because she is genuine. The reason is not the characters. Mary Anne (Dawn Wells) is real.

Born in Reno, Nevada, she attended Reno High School and then majored in Chemistry (Professor was a high school science teacher) at Stephens College. She transferred to University of Washington in Seatle where she graduated with a degree in Theater Arts and Design.

She spent summers in her early years in the Teton Valley of eastern Idaho and relocated there in the 1990s.

She was Miss Nevada in 1959, representing the state in the 1960 Miss America contest.

Her competition for the role of Mary Anne included Raquel Welch and Patricia Ann Priest.

After Gilligan's Island, she began a successful theater career that is still going on.

She is also runs a successful business, "Wishing Wells Collections" that makes clothing for people with limited mobility. She is the founder of the Idaho Film and Theater Institute, a not-for-profit eduational organization with "a vision of education, technical training, and economic development in Southeastern Idaho.

She was #50 in TV Guide's "Fifty Sexiest Stars of All Times" (men and women). Ginger (Tina Louise) did not make the list.

Married from 1962 to 1967, she is single.

Hope this is good enough!

Here is some more info in addition to my Saturday, January 19, 2013 9:06 PM entry. I found a few complaints where users appear to have over-torqued the bolt and stripped the threads. Reviewing the instructions, the user should reset to zero when they change the setting. I don't know that this is what happened, but it could be a contributing factor.

I do hope my February 01, 2013 4:45 PM is a winner. I do need this.
