Unboxing Work Sharp's Guided Field Sharpener: Comment, Win

By: Gordy Krahn

Jan 02

It's a new year and I've got some new gear to unbox. I apologize for my recent blog absence; between the holidays and trying to burn up some vacation days in the woods, I haven't been spending much time at my desk. But I'm back, so let's get to it with the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener. Don't forget to leave a comment below.

Looks like a great item for a day pack or even a coat pocket. I have a Lansky set for my bench in the basement, but nothing really portable. I also don't have any experience with Worksharp products, but maybe Gordy can change that.

I have the worksharp power model and this would just make it even better. Get it sharp at home and take this out in the field to keep it sharp.

It sounds like they engineered the product real well. I would definately carry it in my daypack or waist belt. Thumbs up from western ny!

I like the leather strop feature. A lot of people put a rough edge on their knives and leave it at that. A leather strop or a flat piece of frosted glass puts an amazing finish on an edge. With this sharpener, I could hone a knife so sharp, it would cut you just by looking at it!!

This would be a perfect field unit to throw into the backpack for any hunting season. I have a Lansky kit but that is for sharpening when you have alot of time. The Worksharp Guided Field Sharpener would be for quick in the field sharpening. I would like to try it.

I've been sharpening all the knives for my family since I was about 12 years old and still have the same set of stones.I don't know where they came from or what brand they are but they have been the best until recently when I started having problems getting the edges as sharp as I like cause the stones are getting thin and worn out.Would love to give this system a try so if you could make it happen I would be very grateful.

Looks like a nice unit. you should be able to keep a nice edge on your blades with it. It's nice that it has a leather strop. It's amazing how a strop will prolong an edge. I shave with a straight razor and the stropping aligns the edge and keeps it shave ready.

Happy New Year, guys and gals! I put an edge on my knife using the tool after we shot the blog and it did a great job. Very easy to use and fool proof ... even for me and I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. They're listed for 35 bucks on their website but I found them as cheap as $28.26 with free shipping on Amazon.

Very versatile sharpener. I like the ease of having the angle guide. The leather strop is a nice touch as well. It appears to be extremely portable so you can take it anywhere. I will have to get on Amazon and give it a look for sure.

Happy New Year to all. I, too have the work sharp belt sharpener at home and it is a great product, but you ever have a great day in the field with your buddies. They always seem to appreciate your blade and now you need just a little edge for your kill. It you sent the sharpener here, just maybe some good luck will come my way and help us all out.

This is something EVERY hunter needs. Dull knives have no place in a hunters gear bag or pocket, dull knives will hurt you! We are always sharpening our knives to keep that fine edge on them especislly in the field when skiining and boneing out deer, Elk and other critters. There are many different types of sharpeners on the market these days. This unit looks like it has all the needed sharpening tools in one. What a great idea and usefull compact tool! I could lose some weight in my pack with one of these!!

Gordy,
It is a crying shame. I know it all for entertainment, but come on. Here is our Club President and a knife that will not cut the box tape. What happen to the saying, "Sharp Knife is a Safe Knife?" I think you need it more than us. Get that knife sharp and keep it sharp. Remember the old saying (see above).

I carry a pocket sharpener for just the occasion. Just ask our freight driver what I do when my Leather Man Surge does not seem sharp when inspecting our deliveries. I am constantly using the my sharpener at work and at home to open mail, toy packages, and to snip the stray strings on my wife blouse/pants. I even carry it to church on Sunday.

I allways like trying new sharpeners, I have really good ones and some not so good. Not only do I keep all the knives around the house sharp and half the hunters in our deer camp. Some people just find it hard to accomplish the art of sharping a knife no mater what they use. It is my openion a dull knife is a very unsafe knife, we all know the reasons --too much pressure to cut! I would truly like to try this one maybe it will be the right teaching tool and get more sells for the sharpener.

I'm constantly having to sharpen knives, tools, and other blades, usually with a different sharpener for each type of blade. This Worksharp sharpener all-in-one would be ideal when out in the field no matter what I'm doing. Wonder how it will work on my sisters messed up kitchen knives?

The Guided Field Sharpener is the complete sharpener for afield or afloat. You can use it at home or in the shop; just don't forget to put it back in the backpack or tacklebox. To help you remember (or to keep it from walking away) it has a hole for a lanyard to attach it.

It has two diamond plates (coarse and fine), two ceramic rods (one large rod that rotates to three positions - coarse, fine, and fish hook groove - and one small)and a leather strop. Two sharpening guides (20 and 25 degrees) provide for a consistent edge. This takes care of hunting knives, fillet/boning knives, and fish hooks. It sharpens serrated and curved blades using the rods. It even has a broadhead wrench for bowhunting!

How good is it? Expect 2-3 weeks delay due to high demand.

I have several knife sharpeners such as the chefs choice three stage electric to ceramic rod type as well as several stone type sharpeners and a couple of carbide ones. This work sharp guided sharpener looks interesting and something I'd like to try out as I sharpen not only my knives but also those of others on hunting and fishing and camping trips. Some of the knives that I sharpen are quite expensive and of excellant quality and it takes a good sharpener to put a good lasting edge on them. Some of my knives are hand made and require a good grade of sharpener to put an edge on them as they are made from high grade carbon steel and high grade stainless and some emery stones don't even have any effect on them. I also own three knives with ceramic blades and would like to see if this sharpener would work on putting an edge on them
