I’m deep into a 2-month road warrior hunting trip to capture footage for TV. Extensive hunting travel requires some dedicated planning, optimistic spirit and grit. It’s not the life you want to live if you cherish a stable, comfortable home environment. You’ll be moving from bed to bed, motel to motel and lodge to lodge every few nights.

If you see a road warrior stint in your future that revolves around hunting, here are a few items you should add to your gear list besides the basic necessities of hunting gear and clothing.
 
1. Sleeping bag. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve landed at an overnight spot only to find no beds or questionable linens. Plus, the sleeping bag can double as a survival suit if you find yourself stranded in winter conditions.

2. Boot dryer. Whether it's a balmy 50 degrees or sinking into subzero temps, nothing sucks more than having cold, wet feet. I pack a portable Peet boot dryer that plugs into a wall or my truck outlet to always ensure dry feet.

3. Extremely warm clothes. I did say bring the necessary clothes you need, but don’t skimp on the heavy-duty clothes to keep you warm late in the season. I always bring my Gerbing’s heated clothing from Cabela's, plus my warmest bibs, parka and a Heater Body Suit. Insulated boots are also a must.

4. Sawzall. This handy item helps me while quartering deer and preparing deer heads for the long trip back to Wyoming. Sometimes it's weeks before I get home. The Sawzall guarantees powerful, versatile sawing capabilities with a quick cleanup.

5. Pieces of home. I put a ton of family images on my iPod and laptop. In the mornings and evenings when I’m getting ready for the hunt or bed, I view them to remind me of why I’m living the Willie Nelson lifestyle.
