Carbon Controversy: Scent-Lok Defeats Naysayers In Court Battle

By: Josh Dahlke

What's your opinion of carbon hunting clothing? Do you wear it and believe in it, or think it's just hocus pocus? Well, the final results of an epic court battle show that "Scent-Lok products give hunters a real advantage."

It's been more than 5 years since Scent-Lok was forced to defend the claims behind the effectiveness of their carbon hunting clothing. Now, nine federal lawsuits against them have been completely dismissed.

According to court documents, here are the legal "Findings Of Fact" that might be of interest to hunters:

- Carbon is a highly effective odor adsorbent.
- Expert testing found that, using highly elevated test odor concentrations that were “likely a ten thousand fold greater than a human body could produce in the course of 24 hours,” Scent-Lok carbon hunting clothing fabrics blocked 96-99 percent of the odor compounds, and essentially 100 percent of the surrogate body odor compounds tested.
- Expert testing also found that after drying, or washing and drying, Scent-Lok carbon fabrics continue to be highly effective at blocking odor permeation.

There you have it. Scent-Lok has been officially deemed as effective hunting gear by our justice system. Undoubtedly, for many, the jury's still out. Some will consider this an O.J. Simpson-esque ruling. My ruling: I will do anything and everything possible to increase my odds as a predator. That means I will wear scent-control clothing (such as Scent-Lok) whenever possible.

Apparently, vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan believes in carbon technology for scent control. According to an article from CNN, while shopping for deer hunting clothes for his daughter, Ryan "explained to reporters the hat and gloves include carbon, which helps block a human's scent."

What's your opinion of activated-carbon clothes and scent control?
How do you control your scent trail?

I do believe in carbon as a scent blocker used in military in filtration against chemicals, gasses, so believe it is effective for scent control also. I will use wafers and cover scents as well to increase potential for a solid outcome.

Good article, but I didn't need the courts to tell me that carbon works on odor elimination. It's basic science and has been used in military, industrial and commercial applications for decades.

Lawsuits!?! Come on! What kind of person goes through the effort to file a lawsuit because they don’t believe the tag on the clothes? That amazes me. I think that carbon clothing works for a couple of reasons: First it’s a pretty common method of controlling and filtering odors, not just in clothes, but also in things ranging from air filters to garbage cans. The second reason (and the best one) is that I have experienced the effectiveness first-hand. I have used clothing with carbon in it and noticed how it stays “scent free” even when I don’t. I’ve had a bear at 5 yards and other critters at a few feet just this season. At that close it doesn’t matter what the wind is doing if you stink they smell you.
I just laugh to myself. Hunting is about preference, if you like it, use it. If you don’t like it, don’t use it plain and simple.

To #npaul... I love it! No one can accuse hunters of not having a sense of humor. I utilize the shower products and sprays. Not because I do not buy-in to the carbon clothing philosophy; it is simply a matter of finances at this point. I feel like any reduction of odor is an advantage in your favor.

I find them to pricey for me but here in central MI would be great for trail riding in the winter Snowmobile or ATV. or even going ice fishing on Saginaw- Bay

I have nothing against scentlok I know people that use it and it works for them, but in my experience ive had deer walk right under my stand and were downwind from me while i was smoking a cigarette and my scent and the odor from the smoking never put the deer on alert. so whether it works or not i respect those who swear by it but myself personally doesnt see the big hype over scentlok

It works, and I have spent hundreds of dollars on it after I called a bull in during bow season, while wearing the scentlok brand of clothing. He was so close he was snorting and blowing elk snot on me for a few minuets before he could not figure out what I was and he turned and casually walked away. He was not the bull I wanted and I was frozen in place to keep from alerting him that I was a predator. I am pretty sure there were scents being deposited in my scentlok base layer pants, but he didn't pick up on it!

it probably works fine but the money is the problem!!but I don't use it. I go out and put sent on me and I do just fine I have animals walk right up to me, or I can walk right up to them, and it does'nt cost half the money!! if I had the money I would invest in it to. but us poorer people have to find other ways to get it done just as good or better.
