By: Gordy Krahn

Sep 11

I walked into my office yesterday and stumbled into a large box labeled "DSD." Phil had obviously dropped off something really special. You need to check out the unboxing in the video below. Share your comments and spread the word to your friends about "Inside the Box." I'll choose one of my favorite comments each month and award the winner with one of the products that have been featured here.

I can see the decoy being used in combination with rattling and grunting. It would definitely get the focus of bucks in the area. What concerns me is that it will also get the focus of other hunters in the area as well. On private land this may not be as hazardous but on public land I definitely would not use it during rifle season.

Wow, quite realistic and irresistible.I mean, if I was a big, mean buck looking for a fight, I would go after this wimp for an easy target

I would love to try that decoy. I believe it would draw the big bucks in. A few grunts, rattle of the horns and it's on. I believe that buck would bring lots of luck.

Great looking decoy, very realistic. As a hunter, at a distance I'd probably mistake it for the real deal, but would wait for some sort of movement before blasting away. would be nice to try out.

Since I don't have a mount on my wall yet (since I am a newbie hunter still lacking in skills and experience) I figure if I win this decoy I can use the head on my wall during the off season as inspiration! :-)

I was scrolling down the homepage and saw the pic of the decoy standing in the field and thought " hmm, nice buck." Then I saw the fifth leg. *cheesy grin* Hats off to DSD. If it's good enough to fool me I'm bettin it'll do the trick!

What an awesome looking decoy! I never used one so before, but if this one makes it's way to my home, I'll be sure to place this one deep in the bush! With the rifle hunt coming, so come the CITIDIOTS who would be sure to empty a clip or two on this bruiser!

Great looking decoy. One comment was about using as a target, that would destroy a great decoy since it is not made for that. Would love to have one to use here in Maine to lure deer in.

After watching the video i went to DSD decoys website. The website MSRP for this decoy is $599.99, not a drop in the bucket for the average hunter, and it also states that this is not to be considered a lightweight transportable decoy. They also recommend it not to be used during any firearm seasons and that you hunt from an elivated stand - all for safety reasons. Yes it looks extremely realistic but for the hunter that hunts public land the hassle of transporting in and out of their areas may outweigh the benefits.

looks like a great decoy and if i was using it i would want to be twenty feet in the air to avoid any bullets coming from a neighbors gun. would love to see how my bucks react to it

Since my property borders state land, I feel if I used this decoy, I would find it full of holes and probably get a few free arrows as well. To realistic looking for where I hunt. Otherwise nice decoy.

He looks bigger than the bucks that I have on camera. I would have to make a wimpy grunt so he doesn't scare my bucks off.He looks very realistic.

So real lookin compared to others, like the way it goes together. Have a decoy that is much lighter but has a lot of parts to put together when transportin. I wouldn't be able to use this one at Christmas as decoration like my other. Someone would shoot it!!!!!

Sure wish we could hunt the rut here in Utah when decoys would work. Also we have no whitetail deer in this state, so it might confuse the locals who would probably shoot it just for something different to hang on the walls. My boys take a look at anything like this and just think about what it would look like after they filled it with lead.
# nickbusch22
Thursday, September 13, 2012 12:53 PM
Awesome decoy!!! If I seen that in the field would of thought it was the real thing. With a little grunting and rattling it would bring that bruiser out of the thicket and right into shooting range. Most realistic decoy I have seen in a long time.

Looks too real. I'd be afraid to use it on public land. Some whack job might mistake for a real deer and put and arrow in it...or worse a slug or buckshot.
# Halfrack

The best part is after your buddy shoots your decoy it only takes a saw and s/he'll have a shoulder mount to be displayed as a memory of a great hunt.
# lrgiese
Thursday, September 13, 2012 5:30 PM
Yea, you need to be careful where you place it or it will be shot up for sure. But it sure looks nice and would be a great addition to sit out on the edge of a food plot.
# Bill257
Thursday, September 13, 2012 9:38 PM
Wow that is realistic, but at $600 bucks and the fact it's can't be easily carried I would have to pass. My policy is never have a decoy out your not hunting over - It would be tough carry this in an out of the woods... and stuffing it in bush is only spreading your scent around. Looks like it would work well where an outfitter or friend with an ATV drops the hunter off though.

would love to win this. here are some stats on this decoy. weight: 30 lbs assembled + 4 or 5 lb brown powdercoated metal base. height: approx. 38" tall to shoulder and approx 60-65" long tail to nose and approx 15" wide. Antlers are 115 class buck and they have molded a second set of 140 class horns that can be ordered seperately. This buck was modeled after a typical 2 1/2 yr old buck weighing approx 150-160 lbs. The body is made from a self sealing plastic and manufacturer states that it does hold up well to a bullet strike. Decoy comes with 24"x24" metal base and a fiberglass pole that can be used with or without the base. hope this info helps.

Hey, Gordy, you better watch out putting that rack on your head. Beings that you did not see Phill, he might be waiting to crack a shot at that set of antlers. Due to finances each year I try to add something to my hunting bag of tricks to try to tip the scales in my favor. This year I was debating between a trail cam or decoy, and the realism of this posturing buck, sure made a believer out of me. Thankyou Gordy for all that you do and stand for in this great sport of hunting and providing food for the family. Thanks again.

Realistic and great looking, but I would expect it to move and mount a doe for the 599.99 that it cost to get it from DSD. I know I maybe cheap, but I guess I am hunting on a common hunters budget. Could only dream of owning a decoy like that and if I had one would be worried if a buck got to close and busted it up.

Thanks for all the great comments, guys. Keep 'em coming. I'll be giving away some more stuff in a couple weeks. We had the decoy set up all day at work and I got a rush every time I walked by it! Hi Gordy! Always fun to see what you're going to pull out of the box next. What a great looking decoy, DSD has some awesome looking stuff, makes you look twice! And watching the video of the Brenner boys using it to draw in that monster buck..... looked like they had that buck all riled up and ready to fight! He couldn't get to the decoy fast enough. If he hadn't shot him when he did that decoy might be in pieces! Love to see young (and old) hunters be successful like that! Keep up the good work at NAHC!

A quick glance at Dave’s website will answer most of the questions that have been asked so far. According to Dave Smith, this is not designed to be an easy carry and set up, you should only use it for archery or if you are law enforcement and it’s one of a kind. I can understand the price when you think of the purpose. This is not your Wal-Mart brand pop-up decoy. It is meant to fool the most critical of observers from deer to hunters. This is about being the premium in quality and effectiveness. I think they have hit the mark.
This is an awesome product and the only questions that I would have would be does it work well with Mule deer and Blacktail. That’s what we have mostly in Washington. There are a few Whitetails in the North East corner of the state but there are more of the other two. Fortunately, for me we have a late archery season in November and the bucks are rutting. I would be more than willing to put this on my list of hunting items to acquire because it only takes a few seasons of empty tags to spend $600. So if I’m going to spend the money I should do what I can to increase the odds.

Amazingly realistic looking decoy. From watching the video, it looks light, stable and easy to set up. This would definitely be an asset during the rut here in Central Maryland. I would love to use one of these to draw some of the big boys out into the open long enough get a clean shot. Very nice.

This decoy looks awesome but I'm concerned about how to get the darn thing in the woods, especially when your carrying a climber stand, weapon and a pack of some sort. Even if your using a hang-on or ladder you still have stuff to hall in. I guess you could stash it near your stand ahead of time, it looks pretty weather resistant, but I usually don't decide which stand location I am using until I check wind, etc. conditions right before I go out.
