Video: Proof Of Why You Gut-Shoot Deer

By: Dave Maas

Sep 07

Losing a blood-trail is depressing and frustrating, and although it’s part of big-game pursuits, it’s something every hunter hates. The video I’m highlighting today isn’t humorous or awe-inspiring—in fact, it shows “yours truly” at the archery range talking about shot placement.

That said, I still think the video content surpasses the “Ya’ gotta see this!” bar I’ve set for this blog. And if you disagree ... well, post your comment for the masses.

In one week I’ll be opening my archery deer season in western Wisconsin, and when I come to full-draw on a buck or doe, I’ll be thinking one thing: Hit the deer, mid body, right over the leg.

If I’m successful, the deer will drop within sight of my stand. I’ll keep you posted.

Until next time ...

The model is pretty cool. I would like to have it to see if hit vitals or not

A nice simple explanation with a good visual model. proper placement can't be reenforced too often.

Yes, I'd agree. Very good explanation on shot placement and why. I've been shootgun hunting for years and only bow for three. Daughter will be going with me bow hunting for the first time this year. I'll be sure to show this video to her.
Well done!

If you don't or know this you don't need to be shooting deer, or anything else for that matter.

It is fine and good that you are putting this out there for viewing if we could view them. Watch some of the hunting shows you will see a lot of hits made by the self professed experts are way back in the gut on standing broadside shots and people see this and see a fast recovery and wonder why placement is so important. I have been hunting for many years and yes I have made some very bad shots inadvertantly it happens at times but don't make it look as though placement doesn't matter.

sure it makes some sense in theory but if you gut shoot a deer hes gonna run a mile away so i hope your a great tracker cause even with a slightly larger blood trail your chances of finding em are slimmer.. especially as night falls. if you aim for the vitals it will be a smaller blood trail but if you puncture their lungs or heart they can only run for about 30 seconds. much smarter to aim for vitals in my opinion. plus if you gut shoot and hit the bladder you risk ruining the hams and tenderloins and its messier to gut.. its your call though. good luck!

@gunleather1 - I just spent Saturday with a bunch of deer hunters sharing an archery practice day. Repeatedly the shot they were looking for was the one that we shown to be bad in the video. I think many of us have been taught that the best shot is there behind that leg.

It's all well and good to say that folks who don't know better "don't need to be shooting deer", but as someone who didn't start hunting till I was 40 I really appreciate videos like this that help me get it right. Funny how you can be taught wrong and then do it wrong. I have to imagine my blood trail will be shorter this year.

Thanks NAH
