Foxworthy: What Bowhunting's All About

By: Jeff Foxworthy

Aug 26

During the next few weeks, waves of deer hunters will be entering the woods with bow in hand to take part in one of the greatest American traditions: opening day.

As I think back to my first season of bowhunting, I remember being unsure of myself. I let all of the negatives dominate my thoughts. Will I get a shot off? Will I miss? What if I just wound it? I was the rookie, and all of my hunting buddies wouldn’t let me forget it. I knew they were just messing with me, but they had no idea how unsure of myself I really was.

When the gift of bowhunting was introduced to me, I realized this stuff ain't easy. And that's what hooked me. I love the challenge of bowhunting, and I'm constantly looking for ways to improve my skills. The simplest way to improve is to practice, and with my crazy schedule, it can be difficult to make time for.

It’s not like I can take my bow with me everytime I fly to L.A. And besides, where would I shoot? I don’t want to end up on TMZ for putting an arrow through someone’s Rolls Royce. Larry the Cable Guy and I did use to set up a target backstage to get some practice in, but we didn’t want to push our luck, and we made a lot of security people pretty nervous.

But, in months leading up to hunting season, I make sure I can get my practice in. I shoot as much as I can, as often as I can, and if my schedule prevents me from getting to practice for a couple of days, I overdose on practice when I get back home. I shoot until it's too dark, then I go in and watch the Outdoor Channel and go to bed with the satisfying knowledge that we are yet one day closer to bow season.

As hunters, land managers, and outdoorsmen we owe it to ourselves, the sport and most importantly the animals to prepare with our bows. And becoming one with your bow does not mean that we become numb to the one thing that attracted us to bowhunting in the first place: the unbelievable excitement of getting so close to the animal you're hunting. If you're anything like me, you'll get buck fever every time you get any deer that close. And that, my friends, is why I bowhunt.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets buck fever every time I get deer in close. Even when I'm not hunting them, like when I'm turkey hunting and I get a doe or fawn in close. I love watching them. I consider it a great day hunting when I don't get any game if I get to see some and watch them.I think my greatest encounter was when I was turkey hunting and had a small spike buck feeding on acorns feed right up in front of me so close he almost steped on my toes. I had the urge to pet it on the head,it reached around my foot to get an acorn and got my scent, he jumped and threw leave all over me.I wish someone had been with me to see it because I don't think people would believe how close it was. Great column.

I love to hunt trough the season and sometimes I go out to the woods just to see what I can see when season is not in. Thats not mention the scouting I do. I did not get out to hunt so much in the last couple of season for reason that were out of my control but I am prepairing for a real good season this year it The Lord be willing. Today I recieved my first test product from stuffstuff and thats got me itching to get out and go. Im going to tryout stick bow hunting this year and I cant wait to see where that takes me. Yeah I know what you mean about buck fever. I get it all the time when I see a deer from the time I spot it or hear it wich ever comes first till the moment of truth. and JSTRUPEK I believe you. I have had squirels in my lap befor while I was deer hunting. Its hard to sit still when you have a tree rat on your knee cracking open a acorn like you are just part of the log you are sitting on. I was using tinks oder neutralizer and from the looks of it, It was working rather well. Im going to be testing SLAY This season and I hope I get the same or simular results.

Bow hunting is a rush like no other. I love that feeling when you spot your prey and your heart starts pounding so hard you know they can hear it. Nothing beats the interaction that you get when you call in a big Bull or rattle in a Buck. I got to experience a whole new version of that just the other day. I was bear hunting with my brother in Washington State where we both live. You are not allowed to bait or use dogs so it makes it quite the challenge. He has never been bear hunting and this was only my third afternoon of my first season so we are truly newbies. We had put out some sweet scent that is supposed to attract bears and about an hour before dark we had one come in. She walked passed us at 7 yards and then turned and came toward us until she was no further than 10 feet. Now before you ask if I’m nuts for letting the bear get that close, I have to tell you that she was small. Maybe 100 pounds if she was soaking wet and full of bananas. We let her pass but just watching her follow that scent trail and walk so close was the coolest experience that I have had in the field to date.

Last year was the first time i went bow hunting. And even though i didn't get a chance to shoot, it was pretty freaking exciting. I saw sooo many deer and alot of other wildlife that i otherwise normally would have missed if i had just waited till rifle season. My first day out i sat in a hanging stand and had a doe 10 yds to my left. At the mere thought of drawing back my heart felt like it was going to explode; it was awesome. Later that season i drew back on a buck and waited for him to step out. As i wait there at full draw; again my chest wants to burst from the thought, " this might be it, my first bow kill." When he finally stepped out(about five minutes has elapsed) He wasn't quite legal; missing an eye guard. I never got the chance to draw back anymore that season but man was it a blast!! I saw more deer and other wildlife than ever before. This year i'm prepared; got a new bow(new to me) shooting farther and harder. I'm ready for Bow Season!!!

The first year was the worst just starting with the bow untrusted ammo.it was tough now it's not as bad I still get the fever from time to time.As was said when you get the deer in close there is something about hunting the animal not detecting your scent or coming to your calls grunts, rattles if it doesn't excite you STOP hunting.

I am right there with you, brothers. To me, it does not matter which one of God's creatures that decides to bless me with their presence! Honestly, what got me hooked into hunting was not even a glimpse of any deer. While sitting in a ladder stand, I had an owl come swooping through the forest and light on a limb no more than 5 yards at eye level. It was hard to keep from chuckling as I watched him, watchin' me; bobbing his head clockwise and then back again, trying to figure out what in the world he was lookin' at. Good luck to each of you this bow season! God bless!
