U.N. Arms Trade Treaty Derailment: Credit To Go Around

By: J.R. Absher

Aug 13

The failure of the United Nations to ratify a far-reaching international arms trade treaty following nearly a month of negotiations was generally heralded by gun owners and pro-firearms organizations as a major victory.

But despite the proliferation of news reports, the fact that the Conference on the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (UNATT) ended in an impasse was not because of the actions of merely one group or one presentation. It was instead the end result of a process that began back in 2006, when the U.N. launched talks to address the global illegal trafficking of small arms, which ultimately led to years of negotiations ending with the July 2012 stalemate.

There’s no doubt that the appearance of National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre before the U.N. in July (as well as in 2011) served as a focal point for the media and for those on both sides of the issue. Speaking as a representative of a recognized Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), LaPierre, in his trademark no-nonsense rhetorical style, made it clear that the NRA would fight any international treaty that included civilian arms.

Further, thousands of U.S. gun owners (NRA members and otherwise) contacted their senators and representatives, urging them to oppose any treaty, should one be ratified.

By law, any treaty involving the United States must be ratified by a two-thirds majority of the U.S. Senate. Days before it became obvious that treaty negotiations were stalling, 51 U.S. senators pledged to vote against any proposed treaty involving civilian arms.

But in addition to U.S. senators and the 4-million-member NRA, there were dozens and dozens of supporting actors in the effort to derail UNATT.

Back in July 2006, my friend and colleague Jim Fulmer, who was then the immediate past president of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA), testified before the United Nations Small Arms Review Conference as one of two-dozen industry and organization representatives who were mobilized by the World Forum on the Future of Shooting Sports Activities. In testimony and presentations, speakers stressed that while the misuse of firearms might be problematic in some countries and regimes, the U.N. should not unfairly target firearms and those who use them for hunting and recreation. (Full disclosure: This writer served as public relations director for the NMLRA).

“Although we use muzzleloading antique or replica firearms that have long since ceased to be used in conflicts, we are not any less concerned by what you do here than our brother and sister organizations that use more modern arms,” Fulmer said during his testimony. “If you do something … that impacts even a few hunters, sport shooters or legal firearms owners, you do it to all of us.”

The fact that the effort to pass the UNATT failed was a victory for all individuals who own and use firearms for a multitude of reasons. It was indeed a united effort, and there’s plenty of credit to go around.

I will not give up my guns for no one! They need to stop trying. All it will do is start more wars. If they put as much energy into wiping out the criminals, as they do trying to take our guns, they might just put an end to all this senseless killing.

A great victory! but its only a battle won we still have a war to fight. the government has gotten too powerful for its own good. the constitution was written for WE the people to be able to restrict the governments power. seems these days the table has flipped and all they do is restrict WE the people. like i said a great victory but we still have a war to fight. lets get our country back to the way it should have been and should always be.

GB/Oregon: Thank everyone that took part in this momentus situation. Now ON Government: Read Thomas Paynes "Common Sense: and get a real feel where our government has gone. Long past time to pull them back. Make them two termers and no more in either house of government and take away all of the perks and make them follow the rules that we have to follow. Such as retirement, No insider trading, no government protection after they are out of office, etc.

NRA, NAHC, my local TEA Party and others too numerous to mention deserve credit for informing their members and helping to mobilize the opposition to the global gun grab. Let's NOT forget who did support it. Hillary Clinton was active and vocal in her support and by default, the Obama administration. Don't believe they support your 2nd amendment rights. This bunch of Chicago thugs will say and do anything to retain their grip on power and push their agenda.

gjeffryes...Amen !! Thugs are EXACTLY what we have in office now. Every one of them. And agendas they truly have and their agendas follow the ideology that We (America) is too big, too powerful, too wealthy, weilds too much influence in the world, everyone is ENTITLED to "their piece of the pie",the "haves" should be MANDATED to give to the "have-nots"(Haves reads...those who have struggled and made an effort to succeed, have-nots reads...those who sit on their collective asses and wait for a handout. Charity is biblical but government mandated charity is counterproductive and causes resentment thus reducing charitable persuasion. We will NEVER succeed by taking from those willing and able to produce and giving to those unwilling to try.And I for one will NEVER apologise for my nation's success and wealth, unlike our little Mussolini in Washington. I will NEVER bow down to ANY foreign leader. It's high time to end this corrupt familiy's oppulent vacation time. Enough is ENOUGH and he's into WAY TOO MUCH !!!

Most of the world does not know that the U.N. is setting itself up to be the governing body for all the worlds countries..."The New World Order". The U.S. Constitution states that we must guard against threats from outside and from within! We the people must remember that our fore fathers did not believe nor did they want "BIG GOVERNMENT", their view of big government was a King or Dictator! Funny how our modern big government likes to try and "force" and "dictate" to us.
