Unboxing ThermaCELL's Lantern: Comment And Win

By: Gordy Krahn

Aug 14

Mosquitoes are a pain, but ThermaCELL has helped big time to scratch out that itchy problem for outdoorsmen. Today I'm unboxing the ThermaCELL Lantern, one of their new devices. Remember to always share your comments and spread the word about "Inside the Box." I'll choose one of my favorite comments each month and award the winner with one of the products that have been featured here.

Hi Gordy
Good products are a handy way to be more comfortable. The more likely you'll stay in your blind or tree stand. Giving you a better shot at mister big

I went camping with a friend that had one and was skeptical at first. We had two at a campsite near the TX and LA border, doing some late night fishing. I hadn't noticed any mosquitoes until I got so far from the campsite to check on bank lines. Mosquitoes were really thick and seemed to follow me back to the tent site. Once there it seemed they were gone again. I am heading to Maine for fall bear and moose season and will hopefully have one to take with me.

i love camping out in the woods with my buddies and this is a sweet product to help get rid of the pesky mosquitoes when camping in the woods. I also thinkk that i would love to have one

Boy would that be helpful. Living in the woods like I do I encounter many many mosquitoes and they just love to chew on me and my family that would be great for nights when we sit on the porch and look at the stars.

At first glance this looks great… upon further investigation it’s not so hot. I can see where it would be nice in a camp but the only thing you are gaining is the light. It lasts as long as the regular units and covers the same area.
Recently, I saw a two pack of the regular units for the same price that this retails for. I would probably just buy two of the other units and use those in camp.
It looks nice and it does provide light but it isn’t as portable and does the same job.

On a side note I have been told that Gordy’s guitar playing won’t keep mosquitoes away but it will keep other hunters out. I can’t say who told me because I promised Melissa that I wouldn’t tell… Um.

The ThermaCell unit for hunting changed how I approach hunting. What a great device. We have gotten to the point that whenever we are outdoors, we take it along with us. Sitting on the deck, camping, etc. I think that the ThermaCell Lantern would be a good addition to our outdoor activities. Having had West Nile virus before, I know how important it is to keep these bugs away from me and my family.

A friend of mine had a house warming party during mid summer at his new house. He lives on the edge of a small wood lot and many farm fields. Sitting at the campfire would have been unbearable due to the number of mosquitosbut we tried one of these Therma-Cell lanterns and the dites decreased dramatically. I can say I only had a hand full of mosquito bites when it should have been a lot worse.

I have used the Therma-Cell products with great satisfaction. I've used them in Canada Bear Hunting to Brown Bottle Hunting around the Patio and Campfire. Went pretty much "Biteless" in all occassions.

Nice Metalica rendition Gordy! I hunt alot of swampy areas here in Florida, and the origonal Thermocell is always at the top of my equipment list. This lantern would be great for the campsite!

Given that the Mosquito is known as the "state bird" around where I live in New Jersey I would love to have one of those lanterns. I do own one that is not a lantern that I use in the field...but this looks perfect for my tent or even my back porch...and I can personally attest that they do work well..I wish they could make one for ticks as well!

I have multiple ThermaCell units, between myself and three sons an one daughter in law that hunts with me, it is a sure way of keeping the mosquitos of South Louisiana at bay. I have not bought a ThermaCell Lantern yet, but would surely like to try one out, but I am sure it is just as effiecent at the conventional units, with the capability of shedding a little light on the matter when needed.

I am always looking for something to eliminate mosquito's. There can be a group of 20 guys sitting around the fire and i will be the only one getting attacked by those pests and to boot i have really bad reactions to their bites, so having a product that can keep them away is always a must for me for when i am sitting in a blind trying to be still and then at camp while trying to relax and not spend all of my time swinging away at those pesky bugs.

Been thinking about a Thermo Lamp. I live on a fixed income so can't afford everything I would like to buy. I heard the West Nile Virus is so supposed to be really bad this year. Would really like to win one of these so I can still enjoy hunting.

THAT LANTERN WOULD BE AWESOME I'VE TRIED REPELLANT STICKS AND THEY DON'T WORK SO WELL AND I DON'T LIKE USING SPRAYS ON MY KIDS PLUS IT CAN BE USED AS A LIGHT SO IT WOULD SAVE SPACE IT'S ONE LESS THING YOU GOT TO PACK.

We used one yesterday evening and just before using it we were slapping mosquitoes continuly. We placed the Therma-cell on the table outside and had no issues with mosquitoes way into the night just talking. This would be great item for use in a blind and for camping. We plan on getting several more to place outside on our next cook out when we have the neighbors over.

I think I have sold more of these then some of the major stores around here. I can't stand anything more than the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear. Anytime, my friends, and neighbors are hanging out around the fire,I bring my ThermaCell Lantern out and all night no smacking or hearing the bugs. Also, early season bow season for white tail, the second thing on my packing list, after the bow, is my Thermacell, period.

I used one this year during turkey season while a buddy of mine was hunting same piece of property about 500yds. from where iwas setup. After about an hour into the hunt he called and asked if i was ready to go because he was getting swarmed with gnats and mosquitos, I told him no because i brought a thermacell with me and wasn't having an issue. Needless to say; for the rest of the day I had a hunting partner to my left the rest of the day

I've been dying to try one of these. We have a pond at our house and the mosquitoes can be brutal at times. The idea is an awesome one, but I'm a little skeptical about using it in the tree stand. The fear of any scent being emitted makes me nervous.

I've used the smaller Thermacell unit in my blind and during NE Ohio summers, the coyotes would have heard me slapping and cussing a half mile away. The mosquitoes around here can almost pick you up and carry you off. This lantern would be just the thing for our little campsite out back where we like to entertain, cook out and just sit around a fore with some close friends and a few adult beverages.

I from Texas and at the present time we are under atack from mosguitoes carring the west nile virus. I highly recomond everyone do your up most to protect you and most of all your family. The desiese control center has now reported hundreds of cases with 19 deaths just in our state. Winning one is not requirement for but I want to put the word out please floks do not take this threat lightly. The thermal cell is a good weapon to battle for your safty and that od family and friends.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 9:40 PM
I have used the personal ThermaCell devices and they work great. However, I've only used it for spring bear hunting at a much lower elevation. I've heard that their effectiveness is not as good at higher elevations. So for the addition of a little bit of minimal light, I personally don't see a pressing need for the lantern.

The thermacell personal appliance works wonderfully , it has allowed me to spend more time in the field without the irritation and possible infection by mosquitos. I should hope a lantern would do the same for my back porch , the blood suckers have been thick this year . They have made it difficult to enjoy a burger and an ice cold adult beverage outside .

I have personally used Thermacell unit while hunting deer, turkey and while I'm doing my backyard work. I think Thermacell has driven the bugs a little "buggy" for a change, just like the old saying, "Never leave home without it" or come home looking like you just had Chiken Pox. Having the lantern would mean enjoying my friends around the campfire longer.

This is a great device. I would like to see it also repel
ticks since we have a tick infested hunting area and having this along with mosquitos, black flies and no seeums.
Hopefully, it can be developed with this feature and we would use it in all our blinds and hunting cabins.

It does work great! So well that if you step out of the barrier it makes the mosquitoes are there waiting for you. One flaw is the on and off button. If you leave it on, there goes your butane and there goes your lantern for the trip.... unless you have a backup.

A thermalcell is a must for hunting here in FL. I have waited until the skeeters were buzzing all around me before turning it on and they all left within a few minutes. It does not spook the deer as I have had many walk under my stand without a hint that they could smell it.

I agree with you Gordy, When Thermacell first introduced their Gadget to the marketplace, I was also skepticle it would work as advertized. As long as they have been around and the numbers of the handheld repellers they have sold tells you they work and work well. I don't know how much that new lamp / repeller weighs, but the worse mosquito problem I have ever seen was on an Alaska hunt and those critters were big enough to carry that lamp away! Maybe I could glue a 5lb weight to the bottom of it? Hmmmm.
