Anti-Wolf Hunters' Ignorance Is Welcomed

I’ve been sitting and watching the most recent battle unfold of the Great Lakes Wolf War of 2012 for the past week or so now. And quite frankly, it’s become entertaining. In case you’ve fallen behind the pack on this one, an obvious supporter of the “save a wolf, shoot a hunter” mindset published a blog post urging anti's to enter the Minnesota wolf hunting lottery in an attempt to keep licenses from the pockets of hunters.

It’s a bold request indeed, and one that’s been met with pitchforks and blazing torches from both sidelines.

Here’s a thought: How about we all just relax a bit?

Don’t get me wrong—my hackles raise and K9s flare at the mere whiff of a liberal-voting anti—but let’s look at this for what it is: a final, desperate, fleeting gasp of air for a drowning cause. This wolf hunt is going to happen, both in Minnesota and Wisconsin. And 2012 is going to mark the first of many.

In a worst-case scenario, let’s hypothetically assume the ant'is get their hands on a pile of wolf tags—I’ll be “liberal” for the first time in my life and generously guess 20 percent (they’ll be lucky to rally enough support to garner 2 percent) of the 6,000 wolf tags available in Minnesota this fall, totaling 1,200 licenses. It’s still entirely possible for hunters to meet the 400-wolf quota from the remaining 4,800 licenses, which would mean an epic fail on the part of this whole "save a wolf" initiative.

But if hunters come up short of the quota—due to a combination of tag hoarding and the simple fact that wolves are a tremendously cunning quarry—the quota and number of licenses available for the 2013 wolf seasons will surely increase. And remember, this whole tag distribution is a lottery, so there just might be double the number of wolf tags available next year if few are killed this year, and based on luck of the draw, the anti's might only get 2 percent—which means 98 percent of an increased number of wolf tags would go to hunters. This kind of ass-biting irony makes me smile.

Oh, and keep in mind that every license the resident anti's soak up in Minnesota will come to the tune of $30, which, of course, will go to fund future hunting opportunities. It’s awfully generous of them to help fund the longevity of our hunting heritage, isn’t it?

So, as easy as it is to get all worked up by the emotion-driven slander of the anti's, there’s little to worry about because their efforts are futile at this point. Science and sound management for balanced conservation—for wolves and for the prey species they are threatening through excessive predation—will win, and that’s what really matters here. So stick a fork in the anti's seeking to destroy the 2012 Great Lakes wolf hunts, because they’re done. And when I shoot my first wolf, I’ll step up and stick a fork in that, too.

Keep your nose to the wind.

Luke, I have to applaud your thinking ability. I will admit that my first reaction is wishing that they had a season for anti-hunting libs but you have put this issue in perfect focus. It’s a no win situation for the anti’s and a win-win for hunters and wildlife.
I hope that one day we will get to the place in Washington State where we can implement a wolf season but until then, I can enjoy annoying anti’s with my conservation supporting, wildlife building, heritage preserving habits that they hate so much.

Thanks, npaul. I, too, hope you get the opportunity to hunt wolves in Washington ... assuming the population can sustain a hunt. And believe me when I say that if Minnesota can bring a hunt like this to fuition, it's possible anywhere.

Have fun annoying the antis with your "habits;" I'll be doing the exact same.

These anti's are getting everything they want anymore. There are just too many bleeding hearts out there with nothing to do but complain about something. I have been a predator hunter for many years and have run into some of these people. They give more respect to animals than they do their fellow man. What they need to realize is that as hunters we are keeping the balance, of life and death, in check for these creatures. There is a thin line in between population and overpopulation for any creature and I have seen overpopulation first hand before and it is NOT pretty. They need to stop complaing and truly think about what the uprising against before they start. If they would just go out and recognize what the wolves, or almost any predator, has to do to stay alive, it might just surprise them that maybe hunters are right. Wolves just don't harvest deer or other woodland game, they go after almost anything. That does not mean that they will come after humans, but I know a couple of events where coyotes have actually attacked and almost killed a man. But then, those are some extreme circumstances.

I have been guiding in Maine for some time now and have found that a good many antis put in for the moose and deer lottery just for that purpose. It generated funds for conservation and since I started putting in for a moose permit, the numbers of permits have risen from around 1500 a year in the mid 90s to over 3500 today. Good reason to invite them to our next venison cook out and thank them all.

Well I have been hunting predators since the early 80's and have met a lot of people who are for and against it. I also believe there are a very large amount of people out there that do love animals more than their fellow man and truly I really cant blame them on that one. Now the wolves in northern Arizona are well to say the least non existent.... but if I ever get to hunt some of those wolves up in Wyoming or Montana you can bet I wont be shy about telling those folks i know who will appreciate it.

Here's what cracks me up (from the original Bremer blog post):

"Yet it was that 'small minority' that drove the legislature to start killing wolves this year rather than wait five years to see how the population stabilized after federal delisting, as the original plan called for. That same "small minority" has been shooting wolves illegally for decades and is now just looking for cover for their cowardly deeds."

Where the hell did that information come from? It's hilarious ... literally ... how desperate this fella is. But at the same time, it's terriffying how many people will take that information and believe it without having the intellegence to simply say, "Is that really true?"

Thanks Luke for a really good piece of writing. I agree completely with NPAUL and his comments to you. It is refreshing to feel your zeal when I read your writing. I also applaud your unwillingness to water down the facts in order to "not offend". Offense be damned, truth full speed ahead. Here's another thought.. if in order to apply for the wolf lottery it was required to possess a current and valid hunting license just think of the lengths and expense incurred on the "anti's" to try to disrupt sound wildlife management. It is time to come up with innovative ways to make their efforts unaffordable just as they try to make ours unaffordable by tying these NON=ISSUES up in court and they get their day for free !! Good work Luke. I appreciate you.
