'My Take': Wyoming Grizzly Debate

By: Melissa Bachman

Jun 04

In Hot News of the Week I discuss the big grizzly debate in Wyoming. Should these bears finally be removed from the endangered species list, and should a hunting season be introduced to help control the population? I'm interested to hear your thoughts! Plus, you'll get a preview of what's to come this week on "My Take."

I would have to agree Melissa,
As awesome as grizzlies are, and as important as it is to protect any endangered species, predator numbers should be very closely managed. It would be great to see even a special permit season to hunt these big bears. It is a great way to limit the numbers taken (if needed) while allowing the population to be controlled. Plus, it would provide for a source of income to offset the cost of reestablishing these bears.

I agree whole-heartedly Melissa.
As a Wyoming resident, I have seen first hand the drain these endangered species put upon the budget of the WGFD. Charged by the feds to manage the species, which unlike other game animals does nothing to generate income for the department. Also large predators such as these require great amounts of territory. Park boundaries mean nothing to them. As they spread out they increasingly get into conflicts with people and since they have not been hunted for so long there is no healthy respect or fear of humans. We are just a lower form of life on the food chain.

Right on, Melissa! The grizz has not been "endangered" in Wyoming in many years. It's time to manage them the way ANY wild species should be managed-hunt them. WYO resident here, too. Crouch Jr is dead on.
