Each year I’m lucky enough to attend the SHOT Show, which is short for Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show. Most years this industry-only event is held in Vegas during January or February, and although I haven’t kept an exact count, I think I’ve been to 17 or 18 of them in a row. This is where I get a behind-the-scenes look into the latest and greatest hunting/shooting gear for that year. Nice.
Even though most SHOT meetings, press conferences, luncheons and dinners have long ago slipped from my memory, there was one event during the 2012 show I’ll never forget. The scene was a breakfast/seminar sponsored by Bushnell. After showcasing the new gear, there was a presentation on behalf of “Folds of Honor,” a program Bushnell strongly supports.
Folds of Honor, through scholarships and other assistance, gives back to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to America. In a word: awesome.
During this breakfast, country music star Craig Morgan (a military vet and avid hunter) unveiled a song he’d written to benefit Folds of Honor. It was the first time he’d performed “What Matters Most” to anyone, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Attending the event with me was NAHC Web Editor Josh Dahlke, and he captured the performance on video (watch it below). Like us, I’m guessing the hundreds of hardcore hunters, shooters, law enforcement officers and military personnel who witnessed Morgan’s performance will never forget it.
You can download a full version of the song by clicking here. It’s a great way to say “thanks” to the men and women (and their families) who’ve given so much for our freedoms.
Until next time . . .
