You’ve Never Seen A Barrel Get This Hot!

By: Dave Maas

May 25

What happens when you fire 1,500-plus solid tracers through an M60 machine gun? In this case, the barrel begins to glow red-hot and a fire starts under the shroud! (Safety disclaimer: Don’t try this at your local rifle range.)

According to the YouTube video description, the barrel on this M60 was nearing the end of its serviceable life, so the owner decided to finish it off in a “blaze of glory.” Be sure to read the final credits for an update on the M60’s barrel condition.

FYI: The video was filmed and edited by James DeGroat of DeGroat Tactical Armaments; click here to learn more about DTA. You’ll find other interesting videos on the DTA website as well.

Until next time ...

WOW! Thats one way to destroy a machine-gun barrel. I wonder if it would have just melted into liquid if you could have fired it a little more?

That was the coolest thing I have seen in a long time.

He was lucky that he didn't have rounds exploding before they were fully chambered from the heat.

I was a crew-chief / door gunner in Viet-Nam, with the First assault helicopter company on the DMZ. The 68th Top Tigers, and I know first hand what happens. We use to strip all the tracers from the belts of M60 ammo, and link them together for night time recon. When the barrel gets that hot, the path of the bullets start to wave in the air. The farther away they start to look smaller, but, if they are coming at your ship, they look like basket balls. I always carried a spare barrel for these missions. There was a spring loader barrel release mechanism, that would allow the barrel to be released, and fall to the ground. Slap another barrel back in, and your ready again. Russell Ziegler
