Federal Public Lands: Closed To Hunting

By: Josh Dahlke

May 04

I hope the title of this blog post caught your attention—that was the point.

A collosal piece of legislation that will affect the future of our hunting heritage was passed a few weeks ago by the U.S. House. Now, the fate of The Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012 (H.R. 4089) rests on your willingness to take action and encourage the support of U.S. Senate representatives.

Find your state senators right here and contact them immediately to urge their support of H.R. 4089. Every phone call and e-mail will make a difference.

H.R. 4089 will accomplish a few things, which are spelled out clearly by our comrades at the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA). Probably the most critical part of the bill is the stipulation that Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service lands will be guaranteed open for "fishing, sport hunting and recreational shooting."

The NAHC works closely with the USSA to monitor ongoing legislation that is relevant to sportsmen.

“Anti-hunting groups are working hard to stop H.R. 4089 because they know it will slam the door on many of their frivolous lawsuits aimed at taking away our hunting rights,” said USSA Senior Vice President Rob Sexton. “Members of the North American Hunting Club can help combat the antis' attempts to stop this bill by contacting their two U.S. Senators today and asking them to support the Sportsmen’s Heritage Act.”

If you don't act, the title of this blog post could become a devastating reality.

I just sent both of Washington’s Senators a message asking for support.
Everyone should do this! I live in a liberal state to say the least, but I know that one of the things that politicians think about is what will get them re-elected. I use this as often as I can to get things done. With enough pressure, you can get most of them to vote the way we would like.
But it’s up to us. You know that the others side will not sit by and watch. Neither should we.

Ahhh....so it begins. OUR lands...... some of which was bought through Pittman/Robertson funds..... now possibly being closed to the very people MOST instrumental in it's very acquisition ?? Fellow sportsman we MUST act in one accord on this ridiculous proposal and stop it dead in it's tracks !! Enough is enough and this is TOO MUCH !!! Full participation by ALL concerned is the ONLY way we'll prevent this travesty. Thank you Josh and NAHC for keeping us informed and even providing the info and means to participate in the defeat of such wrongdoing..sorta brings back voices from past blogs..."I don't see our government doing this " concerning gun legislation.. WAKE UP !!! They're doing " IT " everyday and this administration does it behind closed doors without asking how we feel about it. WAKE UP GUYS !!!!! ACT NOW !!! Thanks again Josh !!!

Your a bunch of paranoid freaks yourself. I m pro hunter and gun owner but I m anti NRA and I m for smart gun laws being enforced and I m for smart use of lands so that hunting can be enjoyed for generations to come. I mean calling people names?? I haven't heard anybody say that any serious politician is trying to take away your hunting rights or land. I support hunters rights and land being left open to our enjoyment but read the whole law first and don't try to just make it, in your words, "the anti gun anti hunting freaks", about scaring people into thinking there is a serious threat to losing your hunting lands. Are there people out there, yes, but calm down the paranoia, no way your rights will be taken away. There are too many republicans and Democrates that hunt to ever let that happen. People on both sides of the aisle enjoy the sport of hunting.

gmcphetridge,
I'm not "scared" of losing my rights, but I am concerned by what I see often coming out of Washington. Define "SMART GUN LAWS" for us please. You claim to "SUPPORT" hunters rights and land being left open for our enjoyment.. Explain HOW you support these issues..simply by saying you do ? It is EXACTLY the anti-gun / anti-hunting clowns that are attacking our heritage.. Who else WOULD it be?? Perhaps you imagine hunters and sportsman coming down AGAINST their own sport??? LOL LOL..what a ridiculous RANTING your whole post was. LOL ROFLMAO !!!! OH BOY !!! LOL LOL

why the surprise? We have the same people in the senate and
house that lets the "President" (elected by some of the people),
and the "Executive" branch (of their government), decide for all
what is right and wrong. These are the same people who have
no idea what real life is like. They don't live on Social Security. Where were these choices for retirement and medical care when
the common "American" came along? It is pitiful that we have our
military fighting all across the world for someone who has no idea
what they have to live with in and out of the military.....
It is time to not only vote these leaders out, but to also vote for
someone who really cares for all of the people. This includes the
hunters, nonhunters and all others who are interested in preserving
what we have while we still have it...

I somewhat agree with your point that our hunting rights are not legitimately threatened and likely won't be at anytime in the foreseeable future. That's the way I want it to stay! So initiatives that keep our rights at the forefront of the minds of our governmental leaders are great. HR 4089 is a "follow the law" bill which means it doesn't really change anything, it just reinforces the status quo. This is just the type of bill that is politically easy to pass. It will also keep the "antis" at bay and supports the continued funding of our precious National Parks.

I sent the senators of our state of Alabama, my current state of residence, and senators of my home state of Hawaii, emails to support H.R. 4089. Throughout my military career, I have had the privelege of enjoying my time in the great outdoors wherever I was stationed at in this "wilderness-rich" nation of ours. I could not sit and watch the current administration make into law any federal regulatuion that will deny our free access to what we, as outdoorsmen, hunters and environmentalists (yes, we truly are), consider part of our heritage which was fought, bled and died for by our fathers before us. Our wildlife areas; federal, state, and local, should be preserved as vigorously as legally possible. Let us make a stand and let our politicians hear our concerns. Our outdoor heritage for future generations are at stake. Will you join us?
