@rsanborn3-

to each their own opinion. I've never had nasty freeze dried food, depends on your budget and how hungry you really are. If you can still complain about having something to eat you're not hurting yet.

That said I would not recommend trying the freeze dried breakfast eggs. They just do not reconstitute well; at the best, they are spongy after adding the water. Other meal options are great- personal favorites included the chilimac and beef from moutain house, beef stroganoff, most of the spaghetti mixes (you can make your own of this too), and dessert is the raspberry crumble.

The main trick is preparation time and practice. Before you leave on your hunt pick up several packages of the smaller size meals to try at home, then buy the big pack for the hunt. This will help you get the proportions right of water to food mix.

If you don't like the sauces or it isn't spicy enough for you (mass marketed food is kinda bland) take your favorite chili sauce along. It will help warm you up too.

I would add that buying the freeze dried food in the largest bulk possible makes it more affordable than MREs, might depend on your area though, I am fortunate to have several bases nearby to obtain them from. Repackage your freeze dried food into quart sized freezer bags, you know, the heavy duty ones? This will make for a convenient mixing bag for your food and less dishes on the other side, just have to boil the water in the pot and add it to the bag; it makes for smaller, more compact garbage to pack back out of the woods also.
