Personal Protection: A Right Or A Privilege?

By: Josh Dahlke

Mar 01

It stands to reason that we should all have the God-given right to protect ourselves from harm's way. But we all know that reason doesn't always govern the government.

In my home base of Minnesota, the state House and Senate have voted to pass NRA-backed HB 1467. If signed into law, the terms of the bill allow Minnesotans to stand their ground by removing the current "duty to retreat" from a threat. Currently, we must extend some "Minnesota nice" to attackers and run for our lives when faced with dangerous individuals. I, for one, would prefer to not be shot in the back.

Now it's on Governor Mark Dayton to approve the bill. According to the NRA-ILA (Institue for Legislative Action), it's quite possible he will vetoe the legislation. Let's hope for everyone's sake that he doesn't because, in addition to protecting Minnesotans, the bill would also provide universal recognition of handgun carry permits across the country: If you travel to Minnesota and have a carry permit, you can carry in Minnesota.

For more information about this bill and other bills that affect your rights as a sportsman and firearms owners, check in regularly with our friends at the NRA-ILA. I recommend you sign up for their free e-mail alerts to stay up to date on current legislative activity.

Is it reasonable that we must fight for such rights? Share your comments below.

It is so unfortunate that politicians can’t seem to understand the simple language of the Constitution of the United States when it says; “..the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
I’ve always taken that to mean the if I am the “people” I have a right to keep and bear arms. No questions, no permits and no interference from the government.
I hope the law gets signed for all our sakes. It would be nice to know that if I ever hunted in Minnesota that I could carry my side arm.

A "God given right" is exactly what it is. Jesus himself told the apostles to take what they had and sell it to buy a sword. Anyone remember that verse? The statement come right after Jesus tells his disciples they are to go into the world and preach the gospel after he is gone. He is referring to the fact that bad things happen and they should be prepared.
This is not to say that Jesus wanted them armed for no good reason. He knew trouble would arise.

There is a definite distinction between using force to defend yourself and taking aggressive action and the distiction is made in the use of the word for kill. The Hebrew and Greek words show one use as murder and the other as defense of life. You don't have to be a scholar in old languages to see the difference.

We all know when malice rises in ourselves and we can feel it when it appears in someone else, at least most of us can. The defense of our life and others is a "God given Right". As any who have studied the constitution know, we have the right to carry the same arms the military carry. We "the People" are the militia referred to in the document. The goverenment put limits on what we "can" carry because they knew if we carried the exact same arms the military carry we would be better able to defend against a tyranical despot and that could not be allowed.

The price of owning one of the military firearms is to have your name, fingerprints, serial number of the weapon, and need to carry thre stamp any time you desire to shoot it. Where cin that is the right to freely bear arms?

Minnesotans should get on the phone and tell to govenor to do right by them and remind him who he represents.

tnylund..Agreed ! The original intent of the 2nd was EXACTLY that..to allow ourselves a final recourse against a tyranical govt. when all possible and reasonable means have been exhausted to replace said tyrants!! I FEAR any government that itself fears an armed citizenry..that fear points to their motive. It is not even slightly unreasonable to believe that that right to keep and bear arms included an option to protect oneself and home and family from other "tyrants"...Thus it is a RIGHT. who the hell elevates himself Lord over all to label it a Privelege ?? Power mongers that's who. Here in NC we have the castle provision that extends beyond the interior of our homes..Mess with my domain and pose a deadly threat and you WILL get lead poisoning at the very least. Period..My right. Claim your right Minnesotans and all Americans. We are on the verge of becoming "subjects"

and right to carry reciprocity is a no brainer too..How many Washington fatcats would exercise their "duty to retreat" if threatened..NONE. Why should we retreat..and why shouldn't we be "allowed" to carry our protection wherever we go? no Good reason..just lame bureaucratic mumbo jumbo talk around crap intended to subjugate us and make us compliant and submissive...passive ideally... LOL LOL jokers
