Do Squirrels Poop?

By: Luke Hartle

Feb 09

It’s a simple question, really—and one that should theoretically evoke the definitive answer of “yes!” Do squirrels poop? According to just about everything I’ve learned since I can remember having the ability of retaining information—not to mention sheer logic—states that everything that consumes anything to survive must expel some sort of waste.

But on the other hand, I had it beaten into my head in college (I’m still convinced I’m the only conservative-minded fella to graduate from the University of Minnesota with an English degree) that any good journalist—and any student of life, for that matter—should question everything.

So, I ask you again: Do squirrels poop?

There’s no question I’ve logged more hours watching squirrels while deer hunting than I have watching deer while deer hunting. And if I had to bet on it, I’d put my nickels down to assume that general statistic holds true for you, too. And as long as I’m riding the assumption train, I’m going to guess you’ve seen deer plant some fecal seeds on more than one occasion. Have you seen a squirrel exhibit similar actions?

And, of course, there’s the whole “I saw a video on YouTube of a squirrel letting it hail!” argument. Maybe. But I bet I could work with my TV producers and have a video up on YouTube in less than a week that would make you believe I can balance a VW Bug on my trigger finger.

Am I obsessed? Potentially. Mentally unstable? Without question. But I tell you this: I’ve logged hours watching squirrels in the hunting woods and haven’t seen one make a stink. Not one. Heck, I’ve logged enough hours in the woods to look you in the eye and tell you that I’ve witnessed a tree falling in the woods on it’s own accord—and it does make noise.

As a venatic addict, it’s become vital to understand everything possible about the game I pursue. If squirrels really don’t poop, what else have we been missing? Food for thought.

Keep your nose to the wind … and your eye on the squirrel.

I have never seen squirrel poop. My father in law (who has killed more squirrels than I can guess) has taken me many times to hunt tree rats, but never, not once, has ever said..."thats squirrel poop. He has shown me rabbit poop, possum poop and he can even find racoon poop, but no squirrel poop.
Now, when I skin them they have fecal matter, but I have not seen one poop or seen poop from a squirrel.
So scientifically-yes, proof-no!
Great article. I imagine my father in law and I will be having this conversation this weekend when we are out hunting!

I would have to say yes for two reasons:
One, I just happened upon a web site the helps you identify “Squirrel Bites” so you know what’s living in your attic. (Of course the description and the picture provided was so broad that it could have been hamster food)
The second reason (and the more convincing) is this, I was hunting squirrels with a friend when I was younger. We saw one sitting on a fence post and it was his turn to shoot. He fired and missed and that’s when he did it; the squirrel turned, flicked his tail like a pez dispenser and left a little pellet sitting on the fence post.
I took that as some sort of obscene gesture so I knocked the disrespectful rodent off the next fence post.
There it is.. proof that they poop. However, they only do it to express their feelings.

Yes they DO..and quite prolifically when they use the attic as main abode!! I have a hundred year old farmhouse/hunting hideout in the mountains of N.C. and I had to finally crawl up there this winter to evict the critters and seal the port of entry...maybe I could consult for our FINE LEADER in Washington because I stopped them !! LOL Anyway the attic was piled w/ handy little pea-shooter sized pellets that were no match for my shop vac ! But I have never seen them in the act in the woods. npaul..Thanks for the visual.. I can just seee that little bugger turning his dark side toward you and making his "deposit" LOL LOL. Humans are just the opposite...to express our feelings we "don't give a s*** . !!! Thanks for the thought provoking question Luke !! Never really occured to me to wonder but NOW..you've given me yet another purpose to sit in trees and patiently watch and wait.. Oh boy !! G'day all and happy hunting !! LOL LOL

I posted this on our local hunting site.http://www.cthuntingnshooting.com We had a good time with this thank you. We have a few wild life exterminators who confirmed that the do in fact. Altho it is a given that they would have to. I have not seen this take place in the hunting woods. Now, I will more then likely be watching even more then I already do!

Spottedcrow: I'm glad you were able to use this! My mind has the habit of going to some pretty scary places while hunting, so look for more to come!

All: I appreciate the insight. If you've got similar questions for me, lemme know!
