It’s a long-established fact that breaking hunting, wildlife and angling laws doesn’t require the highest level of human intelligence. That said, here are our picks for the "Headline Hunter" blog’s "Dumbest Poachers of 2011."

Prison Poaching?
We all can agree poaching is dumb. But poaching on state prison property is decidedly dumber.

Three teenaged young men hailing from Lawtey, Florida, were arrested for using rifles to allegedly poach deer on state property near Raiford, Florida, on Jan. 6, 2011. The state property in question happened to be the grounds of the Florida State Prison, where the introduction and use of firearms constitutes a second-degree felony.

Beyond the obvious lack of reason and logic involved in the act, one of the three, Houston Fender, 19, had been to court just weeks earlier, charged with two counts of taking deer out of season. According to the "Lakeland Ledger" newspaper, Fender was sentenced to 1-year probation and a 3-year suspension of hunting rights by a Bradford County judge on Dec. 14.

As a result, Fender was charged with the introduction of firearms on prison property, taking deer during a closed season, hunting in a closed wildlife management area and violation of probation. The other two, Aaron Griffis and Shea Wilson, both 18, were charged with introduction of firearms on prison property, taking deer in closed season and hunting on a closed Wildlife Management Area.

Lion Poachers Treed

Authorities with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks say an online forum posting led to the arrest of four Wisconsin men who admitted to illegally hunting and killing five mountain lions in an area north of Helena over a 2-year period. The four were found guilty of a variety of charges in May 2011 and paid $5,000 in fines and restitution.

Montana game warden Kevin Cook said a tip and the Internet helped them track down Eric Steingraber, Daren Evenson, Jeremy Rosenberg, and Eric Hermansen in Wisconsin.

“We caught wind of this in December of 2009 and it finally made its way through the courts; we didn’t want to say anything until it was all wrapped up,” Cook told the "Helena Independent-Record."

According to Cook, he and game warden Dave Loewen received a tip that several individuals from Wisconsin had been seen hunting mountain lions on private property without permission, and through their investigation managed to identify them. They discovered that one of the four also posted his version of the hunt on an online hunting discussion forum.

Along with the fines, each had their hunting, fishing and trapping licenses revoked in Montana and 36 other states for 2 years. In addition, they are restricted from applying for special licenses or permits for 7 years.

Facebook Poacher
You’d think even lowlife game-law violators would know better than to post the results of their dirty deeds on Facebook. Well, they apparently don’t, and that’s why a growing number of state game agencies are successfully using the Internet to track down game and fish bandits and bring them to justice.

Authorities say convicted felon Darin Lee Waldo, 43, posted photos of his poaching exploits on his Facebook page, where he got the attention of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Internet Crimes Unit. As a result, Waldo was charged with seven felonies and six misdemeanors related to his illegal activities.

Investigators looking into Facebook posts by Waldo discovered he and friends were poaching game on Lake Marion Creek Wildlife Management Area in Polk County during closed season. Waldo is a convicted felon who cannot legally possess firearms.

“Our investigators were able to gain Waldo’s confidence over the Internet,” said Lt. George Wilson, supervisor of the FWC’s Internet Crimes Unit. Via the Internet, Waldo exchanged photographs of illegally killed game with FWC investigators, participated in chat rooms describing his actions and invited undercover agents to participate in two illegal hunts.

Has anybody heard the saying, Dumber than a box of rocks ? They should all lose the right or should I say privilidge to hunt or fish for at least, lets see life. Maybe even some comunity service, like helping out on operation clean stream and animal rescue services for hurt deer and elk.For the boys on prison property put them in aprogram to help prisoners learn a trade or to read or get a g.e.d.Just a thought. It might make some others think before do something stupid and embaress the real hunters out there that do the right thing, the right way all the time.

I used to hunt with a guy who posted a picture of a deer him or his dad shot with illegal baiting products clearly visible in the picture. The bottles were in the John Deere Gator along with the deer. I was approached by our CO here in Illinois about it because he knew that I used to hunt with them. I told him the truth and pulled the picture up on my phone, never did hear anything more about it though.

Poaching is big business, increase the fines and make prison time a normal thing and it will slow down.

This is what hurts hunters the most. People read these articles and assume all hunters are the worst of the lot. Good hunters are avid sportsman and the policeman of the wildlife. Lock thes idiots up and throw away the key. Or better yet make them work hard for conservation.

why give their hunting rights back to any of them, they don't deserve a 2nd chance to carry a firearm, let alone hunt animals that they have any respect for. a#$wholes like that give real HUNTERS a bad name.

I must agree with the comments of my fellow hunters, The Honest Hunter suffers from the bad press of the Law Breakers. I believe the Fines and Jail Time Should Increase with each offense - just like a DUI, with each offense the Fines and Jail Time Increase Exponentially.
There has to be a major deterrent, which includes big business as well - make the Fine & Jail Time fit the offense

(Just like mowgle Comment)

msecrest, I fully agree with you. I am a serious hunter from upstate NY. From the opening of our bow season till the close of our late black powder season I hunt every single minute of legal shooting light I possibly can just so my family has meat through the normally hard winters...why should I have to pay for others stupid acts? There is more than enough game and more than enough time to hunt that game, why poach? To my way of thinking all states should use a three stike rule. with the third strike ending the offenders priviledge to hunt, own a gun...or for that matter even posses wild game meat...to be enforced by regular, and surprise home inspections. Not to mention the exponentially growing fines with each strike...and I like the idea of offenders being forced to serve in conservation groups...thier time doing such work also to increase with each conviction...that said...as has been said before...if came down to my family going hungry or me going out and taking a deer out of season I am not afraid to say I would. As with all rules and regulations there has to be a certain amount of give. And that amount of give would be put up to the investigators and or judge. I would hope if I could prove true NEED for the kill some leinancy would be provided me.

I read a story about a several individuals who hunted on property owned by a United State's nuclear weapons facility. They claimed to have permission and were employees at the facility, but I never heard what happened about it. It turned out to be a pretty big deal when guards at a nuclear facility hear shots on the surrounding land. :)

They also need stronger jail penalties and highter fines for these low life individuals. Take away their hunting implements forever as well as their hunting licenses forever. Maybe that will have an impact on these scum.

OMG they have got to be the dumbest people on the face of the earth especiality the Fender boy in the first story. Didnt learn the first time so he thought he would go out and do it again only this time it was on state prison property. I don't know what other states have as far as penalities for poaching but Ohio doesn't put up with that crap. One of the things they do when they catch poachers that have a buck with a big rack is they fine them so much for what ever the rack scored. There was one not to long ago that the rack scored 189 and the guy was fined$189,000.00 dollars take that you poacher. And as far as the hot line i know some one that has used it and the game warden was at the house within a half hour.Poachers are the scum of the earth.

we all know poaching is dumb I think its even dumber to go on to your computer to brag about it.People who do it should get the book thrown at them, just cause you have a gun or a bow doesnt mean you can do what you want.this kind of stuff is what makes it harder on the rest of us.

There are certainly unethical 'hunters' everywhere. Just as bad are the guys who stole my pop up blind that was left overnight. And the ones who are steeling portable stands by snipping the chains or cables that lock them to the trees. I am starting to use trail cams and aim them at my blinds rather than the game area. I am hoping to catch them, that would give me a lot of joy.

I have to agree with the comments made . ther hunting privileges should be revolked forever and do jail time also. I love to hunt, but if i have to take game by poaching i will never do it.
