Recently, I had the chance to drop in on one of Remington's Versa Max On Tour events. It was hosted by the Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club, located only a few minutes outside of Montgomery, Alabama.

I arrive a bit early and was greeted by Jeremy Cooper, the Versa Max On Tour event manager, and Matthew Senn, owner of the Lower Wetumpka Shotgun Sports Club. I had a good conversation with both of them, asked Jeremy a few questions about the Versa Max, and got a quick tour of the clubhouse and club grounds with Matt. I was very impressed with Jeremy’s knowledge of the gun, and Matt was a great host.

Shortly after 1 p.m., folks started to show up to try out the gun. I was very anxious to try it out myself, but had to wait until most of the traffic died down from the event. In the meantime, I took some photos and shot some video.

Finally, toward the end of the night I had my chance to shoot the Versa Max. Jeremy was kind enough to give me a few pointers and teach me a few tricks about shooting clays. I went through a little more than one box of shells, and there were a few things about the gun that shined.

1. It was able to cycle all different types and sizes of shells without any problems. I didn't see any of the trial guns misfire or jam throughout the day.

2. It had very low recoil. This is very nice for any goose or turkey hunters using heavier loads.

3. Last, and certainly not least, was the ease of disassembling and assembling the Versa Max. This feature makes cleaning an incredibly simple task.

I am more of a pump-action guy, so impressing me with any autoloader is a tough task, but the Versa Max faired exceptionally well. Overall, I would give the Versa Max a positive rating, and be more than happy to use one in the field or shooting sporting clays.

If they ever come out with a slug version of the Versa Max, I know one hunter who will undoubtedly want to check it out.
