I tagged this muley late last week in north central Idaho while hunting with the crew at Boulder Creek Outfitters. It was a classic muley hunt. Another guide spotted him at sunset with a herd of does, and the next morning we were in hot pursuit. Keep that tip in mind. Oftentimes, a rutting muley will stick with a group of does overnight and be there at sunrise ... or at least close by.

We looked over our options and guide Bob Fanus decided to make a wide circle and set up where he suspected they would bed for the day. His hunch was close, but a few does started to sneak over a rise. So instead of waiting for the buck to fall in my lap, I ranged him at 300 yards. My shot was dead on, and one heart shot later I was left posing for big muley photos.

The rut is on. All the whitetails we witnessed last week were snooping, and this muley was blurry in love. I have a day left to try and tag an Idaho whitetail, and then it’s off to Colorado for another muley before I get lost in the whitetail wonderland.
