The caption read “CAMP LSU: Tagged Out.” The picture left no doubt in my mind: My dad and hunting partner had scored big, high in the Rockies of southwest Colorado on a do-it-yourself archery elk hunt on public land.

Two solid bulls flirting with 350 inches is something to smile about for any elk hunt, in any state. We all know that trophy animals aren’t behind every tree, but it’s important to recognize that in this great country, opportunities are more than abundant. Everyone in the United States is blessed with access to hunting lands that many of us as individuals could never afford.

Generally speaking, the wildlife professionals employed by state and federal agencies are knowledgeable and willing to point you in the right direction concerning seasons, access and animal populations in areas of interest. Regardless of species—fish, fowl or furbearer—it’s out there waiting for you to make the first move. 

Make plans with a buddy or two. Pool your resources, hunting skills and determination, and make the most of what’s on the table. Don’t fold your cards and think the stakes are too high for you ... public land is money in the bank! Let me encourage you to cash in on the experience of a lifetime. 

To prove my point, I’m betting next September, Lord willing, dad and one of his buddies will be back in the high life again. Any guess who that hunting buddy is going to be?
