It’s go-time for moose. I'm hoping to put at least one huge ungulate in the freezer this fall, and the elk slipped by me in the short (I mean short) window I had to pursue them. Now I have the opportunity for a Canada moose.
My destination is the area around Nipigon, Ontario. I’ll be working with outfitter Bob Bearman who owns Nipigon River Bear Hunts. A mature bull can easily tip the scales at more than 1,000 pounds, and is an awesome sight as it towers nearly 6 feet at the shoulder.
I’ll be filming for "North American Hunter-TV"—well, at least cameraman Lonnie Garland will—and I’ll be manning my Mathews bow. For exciting action we’ll be incorporating several techniques, including stands in natural funnels, calling and aggressive decoying. I’m hoping for a decoy encounter at close range. In fact, I’d love to have a shot at 10 yards for some in-your-face action.
It’s been several years since my last moose hunt. The photo below (and above) is from my Alaska moose adventure where herds of brown bears and a questionable guide made for the hunt of a lifetime. Stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted on the moose action.
