Politics, Statistics, Opinions And Guns

By: J.R. Absher

Believe what you will about modern opinion polls—particularly those during the general election cycle—but these days they’re often surprisingly accurate and reflect the general consensus of how many Americans vote and think.

Nineteenth century author and humorist, Mark Twain, once said, “Facts are stubborn things, but statistics are more pliable.” It's an adage that was often pointed out to me as a mush-headed student in journalism school decades ago. But today I take polls and statistics at face value, and use them for what they are: interesting snapshots of current events and public opinions.

Let's talk guns.

Take, for instance, the results of a new survey conducted last week by one of the country’s leading pollsters, Rasmussen Reports. In a telephone survey of 1,000 “likely voters” conducted September 18-19, 2011, pollsters asked participants to rate their positive and negative perception about the labels attached to political candidates.

The polling results found that 39 percent of those surveyed considered it positive when a candidate is described as “pro-gun,” 27 percent saw it as a negative and 30 percent said it lies somewhere in between. Further, most respondents identified themselves as Republicans (62 percent), and a plurality of voters not affiliated with either party (42 percent) thought being labeled pro-gun was positive, while 49 percent of Democrats thought the pro-gun tag was negative.

So what does it all mean? That Americans in general—despite political leanings—are supporters of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. And that’s a good thing, no matter how you look at it.

On a similar subject, Rasmussen Reports' telephone survey conducted in July indicated that the National Rifle Association (NRA) has significantly more credibility with likely voters than the National Education Association (NEA), and far more than the environmental behemoth, Sierra Club.

The favorable/unfavorable percentages shook out like this: NRA—54/41 percent; NEA—42/37 percent; Sierra Club—35/32 percent.

Of those polled by Rasmussen, 54 percent viewed the NRA favorably, with 29 percent having a very favorable opinion, 41 percent with an unfavorable view, and 25 percent with a very unfavorable view. Among those polled, 80 percent of Republicans and 53 percent of unaffiliated voters share a favorable opinion of the NRA, while 63 percent of Democrats view the group unfavorably.

A separate Rasmussen poll performed in January of this year found that only 36 percent of Americans support stricter gun control laws, while a 56 percent majority prefer less-stringent gun-ownership laws and regulations.

But wherever you stand on the significance of polling data and statistics, it’s hard to disagree with the late Aaron Levenstein, professor emeritus at Baruch College, New York, who said: “Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.”

Despite the overwhelming evidence that Americans don't want more gun-control laws, this administration tells the Brady campaign that gun-control will come in "under the radar." Every day, more nefarious details emerge of the Fast and Furious scandel. Now they want to con us into ratifying a stealth gun-control treaty (ATT),which is due to be belched out of the U.N. next year. If this administration has its way, we the sheeple will be herded into the coersive corral of collectivism. Our freedom of speech, religion, and yes, gun rights ,will be a distant memory. Could you ever have imagined our government would actually have such a thing as a Regulatory Czar? By the way, I don't wave pom-poms for the GOP.

It is sad that the choice of candidates on any ballot is limited by their stance on the issues of rights, not just gun rights, the cesspool of issues is complicated by the fact that no candidate will align with any persons viewpoint on all issues. That said everyone is casting votes in the direction of the lesser of all evils at best. I consider gun control as being able to hit what you are shooting at period. The longer the current administration is in control, the more rights we will lose, this assumption is based on facts. My votes are always based on a candidates position on individual rights, any candidate that seeks to limit any right I have, will not receive a vote from me under any circumstances. Let it be said that not only am I pro gun rights, I am pro rights period. I hope that all voters will look at each candidates position on individual rights and vote accordingly. Believe me when I say that any laws passed that limit rights will end up in the total loss of that right eventually.

Over 800,000 WWII and Korean War era rifles sit in storage in South Korea because the predent administration would not allow the rifles to be shipped to the USA. What, pray tell is the problem? The American citizens have been note worthy riflemen and women since the American Revolution. Now we are being told by our own government that we should not have the right to Keep ans Bear Arms. The United Nations is also trying to influence our government in banning or doing away with the Second Admendment. We are a nation of riflemen and this, my friends, is why we are still a Free Nation.
Consider this: sell all the rifles to law abiding citizens for a meer $500.00 each and there could be $400,000,000.00 wind fall. And some people might have some work. The Civilian Marksmanship Program would be glad to help. I'm sure. Keep the government out of the proceedings.

What we need to do is get back to what our forefathers really wrote the constitution about. It wasn't republicans or democrats. We need not vote for republicans or democrats straight party line. There are good candidates on both sides, and we need to selectively pick them in our own local elections.
God, Guns and Guts made America. Let's keep all three...

Poll results are all in who and how you ask the questions. These results are conclusive to what the NRA and other pro second amendment groups have been saying for decades. You don't have to own a gun to be pro gun. My father did not grow up around guns but he is a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment. When I became interested in guns as a teen he encouraged me, not prevent me for owning any. Although he still will not shoot with me he still is a supporter. Don't push on someone that don' t want any part of. Just ask them every time you go out if they want to join you. We as gun owners need to put forth a positive message, in dealing with not shooters and/or hunters. let the gun haters make fools of themselves, they are good at it.

This country is on a steady decline, and I am hoping we will turn that around come the next election. I don't consider them anti gun anti hunters or anti free speech, I consider them anti Americans. We've taken away the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer and corporal punishment in our schools, because we may offend. And what do we have to show for it, (nothing positive). When I was in school we said the Pledge of Allegiance, we prayed and I got the board a few times (which I might say was deserved, and did not hurt me in learning that we answer for our mistakes). Our country was founded on our religious belief in God, so if the people who come here don't like it, they are free to go back where they came from. They sure don't have a problem taking our money (which is printed In God We Trust). So until we take our country back and become Americans again, we will continue to go down the path of loosing our individual freedoms. I wonder what a mother in the 40's who had sons fighting in WWII for our freedoms would have thought if she picked up the phone and it said press 1 for english. As for the earlier post regarding the rifles in Korea. Those rifles we used to protect our freedoms and I agree those rifles need to be back home in American hands. Freedom is not free, people !

No one will take my weapons - everyone that is not pro-gun needs to get their head out of their behind and think twice about what they say; after all, they don't have guns ;)

I have often thought what would Jim Bowie or Davey Crockett think of the way our government is trying to control gun owernership in the very nation they helped create. The answer that I continue to hear is "let them try". As a vetrean, cop, and paramedic I have seen "both sides of the gun" pardon the pun. The gun is just a tool and it takes a person to use the tool so in turn it is the persons fault for using the tool in a wrong maner. We need to punish the person and not the tool because the rest of us need the tool. I truly believe it is our right to keep and bear arms and I am very tired of politicians telling me what is good for the people of this nation. I work, pay my taxes, and am a law abiding citizen. All I ask in return is stayout of my buisness and let me and my family enjoy the rights granted to us so long ago. Being a responsible gun owner is not the burden of government it is our's.

This administration thumbs its nose at the constitution by using what it calls "executive order", Each time taking a bigger chunk out of the constitution. The latest "decree" stopped the prosecution of over 300,000 illegal aliens (I'm sure you must have heard about it on the news..., lol) and virtualy gave "carte blanche"to any future illegals by rendering our frontline Border Patrol & ICE, completely impotent! Notice how more & more gun violence, terrorism & drug violence is making the 6 o-clock news, yet nothing is being reported about the little avoidance of Congress, in these"runs at our "constitutional rights". If nothing is done soon, we might wake up some morning in the near future, to find that our 2nd Amendment has been bypassed due to an "executive order" & we now are signed onto the U.N. Small Arms Treaty. So now, just like the sheeple in Great Britain & Australia...., For the "protection & security of all"..., Deliver any semi-automatic, automatic, high capacity & all handguns, to your local PD. Non-compliance will result in heavy fines and/or imprisonment"! Just a thought.......

everyone here has a point and i very stongly agree w all of u. now granted i'm not a member of the nra but i'm a lifew member of the club and have been for 5 yrs and all these gun control advocates r missing the BIG picture here as well as congress. what they all need to do is look back in history and look to see how many prsidents r military veterans and look at the retired military personal and look at their backgrounds and find out how many of us veterans would stand for something like this bullshit and knock on our doors cuz we aint the criminals they r (congress and anti-gun activists) they all need to use their heads for something other than hat racks and re-read the constitution and then think about it all. what really sucks is obamas trying to turn this country into a socialist nation well f#!& him ill keep my rights and he can keep the damn change

More gun control is on the way. Look at California. Just passed a law that you can not open carry. Going thru the congress right now is another bill that sounds good but not everything is good as it appears. It opens doors to bigger control over the people and their God given rights and as an American. We the people better educate ourselves and become involved. Write your congressman and senators. Find out where they stand and let them know your positions.

Education and facts (stubborn things) are the way to convert our gun fearing neighbors. Support your youth gun training programs, support gun education in your community, support your politicians that are pro gun. We as a society are at long last realizing our government and special interests have been lying to us. Education and truth will destroy their credibility and expense their lie.
