Strong-Willed Strong Bears

I'm writing from Strong, Maine. I've got Terry Boeder with me—one of the producers from "North American Hunter-TV." With the help of Spruce Mountain Guide Service, we're hunting black bears with hounds, hoping to capture enough footage to produce a killer episode for the 2012 season of "NAH-TV." It's my first time running bears with hounds, and one thing's for sure: It won't be my last.

Yesterday, after an unsuccessful day of checking baits from which to run the hounds, we pulled one of the scouting camera cards and discovered pictures of a very solid bear. Problem was, it was 8 a.m., and the pictures were taken nearly 9 hours before. Knowing the trail was cold, Scott York, owner of Spruce Mountain Guide Service, released his lead and most experienced dog, Willie. It took him a little time, but the veteran bear hound finally struck the trail.

After nearly 6 hours and a few very close encounters, my good friend and hunting buddy, Joe Byrd, put a slug in the bear to end the chase.

It's a big ol' boar that weighed-in at 360 pounds. We're guessing the skull will go about 19 inches. Now it's my turn.

Thanks, all! I really didn't know wheat to expect out of a bear/hounds hunt, but I was exceptionally surprised. Bears are my No. 1 favorite game species to hunt, and I think I have a new favorite way of hunting them. Chasing bears with hounds is like a wicked-intense game of chess, and I must admit the bears of Maine got to yell "checkmate!" much more than we did during the hunt. It ain't easy, and every minute of the hunt brought something new and exciting.

If you're looking for a topnotch black bear experience behind a great pack of hounds and an exceptionally hard-working, knowledgeable and fun-to-be-around guide, I can't say enough about Scott York of Spruce Mountain Guide Service in Strong, Maine.

I encourage you to give him a shout to ask questions if you're at all interested. And maybe I'll run into you in Scott's camp someday, because I'm going back ASAP!

Sounds like an awesome hunt. I just don't think i would like to give it a try cause i can't run no really i can't run. So if a bear comes after me i'm going to empty my gun at him then i'm going to lay on the ground right where i'm at, and hope and pray to god he don't eat me.
