Hunting Purgatory: How Do You Cope?

By: Luke Hartle

Aug 24

There are three times of year I utterly despise:

1. March. March in Minnesota is worthless. Period.

2. Early April. After a long winter, and a March that generally lasts as long as the other 4 months of winter, early April is about as comforting as a black bear swat across the arse. I’m a huge fan of hunting turkeys during the late season; if you’ve seen a horny tom come running to a seductive purr after all the hens are bred and nesting, you know exactly why I wait. And, to top that off, I generally have a bear hunt lingering around the late-May timeframe. So, sitting around early April waiting for my chance to hunt … while listening to up-to-date stories of others from the field … is hell.

3. Right now.

So far this week, I’ve had to suffer through a picture show of guys limiting on Canada geese in South Dakota and scouting cam photos of bears aggressively working northern Minnesota baits. Heck, I’m supposed to be teaching NAHC Web Editor Josh “Slim” Dahlke how to shoot an arrow straight out of a bow and he’s leaving me for a Maine black bear hunt in a few days.

Meanwhile, I’ll be rocking the khakis back in the office, getting Slim’s boastful texts, daydreaming of hunts to come while I monotonously “X” days off the calendar. This time of year is indeed brutal.

Now, don’t get me wrong: I try to cope and do more than just pout. I’ve got all my bowhunting stands de-brushed and ready to rock more than a month in advance. Scouting cams are putting in long hours over trails and mineral sites. And my trigger finger is finally getting its annual callous from long hours at the archery range.

But it’s not the same, is it?

There’s something special about being afield with the intent to kill. Sure, I dig spending time in the woods prepping for the season, but it’s not the same as participating in the season. I don’t need to kill, but I need to at least be in the game with that intent to kill. And damnit, this game can’t get started soon enough.

So here’s where this whole group therapy issue comes into play. I crack my knuckles and pick my nose at least twice an hour, and still the clock doesn’t spin fast enough.

How do you cope? I know I’m not alone in this hunting purgatory, so if you’ve got a tip to help me cope, come forth!

And, as always, keep your nose to the wind.

I know what you mean! I can't even watch rerun hunting shows on TV b/c it drives me crazy. I live and hunt in Georgia. I don't care if its Hot. I want to be out there - but I have to work so I can aford to be out there. Its hard to focus even though I'm doing all the feeding, scouting, trail cam, tree stand, practicing, planning stuff you are doing. The only thing I can do sometimes is to look for a new opportunity or hunting area - thats like work - but it pays off sometimes.

EDoll3: Hang in there and know you're not alone! I, too, would rather face the bugs and heat of the early season than watch from the coutch as someone else gets to have all the fun!

JohnLawrence: I have to buzz my head or I'd pull all my hair out, too, waiting for my archery tag to become valid! But look on the bright side ... it's ... almost ... here. ...
Got any big buck photos from scouting cameras yet?

Sounds like you need to take a week and head down to Texas for a wild hog and exotic bowhunt. I did that 4 years in a row a decade ago every March and it sure cures the winter lulls. Lots of fun! The Bug Scuffle Ranch was pretty cool down near Sabinal. Heard some OK things about Maurice Chambers ranch too. There are many free range operations too if a large fenced operation isn't within your "ethical range".

dahusker: Texas is indeed the place for me in March. I hunted free-range axis deer this past May near Rocksprings, Texas, and would love to go back this coming March to beat down the cabin blues. And what would a hunt in Texas be without hawgs?

Thanks for the hints on outfitters, and I will surely be looking for free-range outfits only. I have nothing against a fella who chooses to hunt high fence, but I want nothing to do with it.

I go to the 3-D range behind Georgia DNR headquarters a lot. Yesterday I got a bonus. While approaching the 45yd doe target to retrieve my arrow I had 2 real does erupt from the thick brush 15 yds behind the target! I am so pumped now. 8 days to go.

Got the shinny golf clubs put up and the dusty bow out for practice. Food plots are planted and trail cams hung. It's the waiting game that I hate the most. 3 weeks and 5 days till archery opens here in Indiana.

Go to the range shoot shoot and shoot. It always helps to stay sharp at the range. Do some pt to get your heart rate up then see if you can hit the target off hand. All my hunting rifles I can hit 6 inches off hand at three hundred yards. Shoot the same bullet as you hunt with so you do not have to rezero. Good luck

Setup some nice 3d targets out in the yard and climb up on the tree to get some nice target practice from up in the tree. Get all my equipment ready and re-cleaned and holding on for whitetail opening day this Thursday!!!!!!!!!

relentless shooting practice and constant scouting keeps me occupied, but i agree IT IS NOT THE SAME....
Go to a piece of woods your not hunting and set up your own 3D course, excellent practice and somewhat simulates the hunt

All:

Thanks for the plethora of fantastic ideas. I'm still pouting, but time is drawing near! For those of you in Missouri and other states where bowhunting opens Sept. 15, drop me a note and send me pictures with field updates.

I have to wait until Saturday (9/17), but you can bet your trembling trigger finger I'll be in my stand 2 hours before legal shooting light because sleep never comes the night before ANY hunting opener, especially opening day of bow season.

I hunt Deer and Elk this year in New Mexico. 2 weekends in a row. Gonna be a great two weeks but its kinda blowing your wad all at once packing it into 8 days. I get to hunt dove and that takes the edge off. I go to the range as much as possible and clean my gear, reload and read anything I can. I love this time of year and I hate it all the same cause once it is gone, no hunting for another 12 months.

I agree with you 110 % on the free range. I don't agree with the high fence at all. How fair is that ?
